Job summary

The Iowa Department of Transportation seeks a Diesel Mechanic to maintain a diverse fleet and equipment, ensuring operational readiness to support the agency's mission of Making Lives Better Through Transportation.

Responsibilities include prioritizing repairs, diagnosing equipment, overhauling diesel components, and supporting roadway projects in adverse weather. A Horizontal Career Path with trainings and pay increases is available.

Qualifications

  • Three years of full-time work experience in automotive or heavy equipment mechanic work.
  • Total of three years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where 30 semester hours of post-high-school education in automotive or heavy equipment mechanics equals one year of full-time experience.
  • Current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes eighteen months of full-time work as a Mechanic Helper.

Responsibilities

  • Set priorities to ensure the most critical repairs are handled first and coordinates with supervisor.
  • Perform diagnostics on equipment and associated systems to identify and make needed repairs.
  • Overhaul components on gasoline and diesel equipment.
  • Analyze, diagnose, and determine necessary repairs on computer-controlled systems and other technology.
  • Order and maintain shop inventory.
  • Maintain electronic files related to repairs.
  • Complete emergency equipment repairs and could work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Assist maintenance with roadway projects including snow and ice removal as needed.
