Our Diesel Mechanics are experts in all things bus. They are forward-looking and experienced problem-solvers responsible for keeping our vehicles in top performance on the road. As an essential member of the Maintenance team, their skills in mechanical diagnosis, identification and repair ensure that our fleet of nearly 700 buses is safe for service for our valued riders, employees and the community. The Diesel Mechanic performs and supports a wide variety of bus repair and maintenance duties on our buses. Primary responsibilities include rebuilding, repairing and maintaining engines, transmissions, differentials, gear components and related component parts.

Other duties include repairing and maintaining passenger and operator seating and upholstery, completing repairs to the body and structure, preparing for painting and providing welding, metal fabrication and machining services as necessary. The Diesel Mechanic also performs similar duties on our transit support vehicles and will have opportunities to help power our all-electric bus fleet in support of our zero-emissions goal by 2040.

Ensure a commitment to safety through consistent and professional behaviors in performance of job requirements that demonstrate safety is a fundamental value that guides all aspects of our work. Perform related duties as required.

Serve as a good steward of TriMet by regularly utilizing our transit system to maintain a strong and current understanding of customers’ experiences and of TriMet’s product and service offerings.

  • Diagnose equipment system malfunctions (i.e., electrical, air brakes, suspension, heating and cooling systems, transmission, engine, lift, etc.). Identify any defective component or components. Complete all necessary repairs and replace any defective components.
  • Perform road call service on defective equipment when required. Identify the problem and take appropriate action to return vehicle to revenue service or to the garage.
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections as assigned and determine vehicle condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests; identifying worn and damaged parts.
  • Diagnose engine, engine component malfunctions and transmission defects. Identify defective components and complete repairs. Accurately fill-out/complete, and submit to the supervisor, parts issue slips and repair order/time tickets.
  • Use District equipment, parts, and supplies in a safe and efficient manner. Report any defects as needed.
  • Perform battery charging and maintenance when required
  • Repair and replace windshields, windows and mirrors as necessary.
  • Repair and replace vehicle interior parts and accessories.
  • Perform frame repairs and rubber flooring installation.
  • Perform machining operations by using metal turning lathes, drill presses, shapers, power backsaws, grinders, welding equipment and related hand tools.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Tag defective parts in support of the maintenance warranty program.

A minimum of a High School Diploma/GED or equivalent is required.

Eighteen (18) months of training in diesel technology and power systems at an accredited school or training program are required. Two (2) years of experience working as a heavy-duty diesel mechanic are required. Transit agency and/or trucking fleet experience is preferred. Must have a valid Oregon driver’s license. Must possess, or can obtain, a valid Oregon Class "A" Commercial Driver License (CDL) with passenger endorsement, no air brake restrictions and a valid DOT medical card.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, management, and the general public.
  • Ability to work weekend, graveyard, swing, or day shifts and attend work on a regular basis.
  • Ability to successfully complete certification and recertification training as appropriate.
  • Must pass required physical examination with drug screen, and meet the physical activity requirements of the job, including the ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to perform all essential functions, with or without reasonable accommodation.

    Hiring Bonus

    For eligible employees hired into eligible non-trainee positions after the date that this Memorandum of Agreement is fully executed:

    i. $500.00 to be paid with the first paycheck after hire in an eligible position.

    ii. $1,000.00 to be paid with the eligible employee’s first paycheck following the 6-month anniversary of hire in an eligible position.

    iii. $1,000.00 to be paid with the eligible employee’s first paycheck following the 1-year anniversary of hire in an eligible position.

    For eligible employees hired into eligible non-trainee positions who were employed with TriMet as of the date that this MOA is fully executed:

    i. $500.00 to be paid with the first paycheck that occurs 20 or more days after this MOA is fully executed.

    ii. $1,000.00 to be paid with the eligible employee’s first paycheck following the 6 month anniversary of the date that this MOA was fully executed.

    iii. $1,000.00 to be paid with the eligible employee’s first paycheck following the 1-year anniversary of the date that this MOA was fully executed.
