Job summary

Scrap Management Industries inc. is seeking a skilled Diesel Mechanic to maintain and repair our fleet of heavy-duty trucks and trailers, ensuring DOT compliance and peak performance. In our fast-paced shop you’ll work with self-directed workflows, diagnose using Cummins Insite and Noregon, and help keep trucks road-ready.

Qualifications

• Experience with heavy mobile equipment and diesel-powered trucks.
• 2+ years on Class 7 and 8 trucks (Freightliner, Kenworth, Peterbilt, Mack, Volvo).
• Strong knowledge of diesel engines, air brakes, electrical, and emissions systems.
• Familiarity with diagnostic software and ELDs.
• Must provide own basic tools; specialty tools provided by shop.
• CDL-A is a strong plus; ASE certification preferred but not required.
• Ability to lift 50+ lbs; physically demanding environment.
• DOT regulations knowledge.
• Organized with attention to detail; able to work fast-paced and with others.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, diagnose, and repair diesel engines, drivetrains, brakes, suspension, and trailer systems.
• Perform PMs, oil changes, tire checks, and brake services.
• Utilize diagnostic tools to troubleshoot issues and complete repairs.
• Conduct DOT inspections and ensure compliance with FMCSA standards.
• Maintain accurate maintenance logs and repair records (digitally).
• Coordinate with dispatch and operations manager for truck downtime and service scheduling.
• Respond to occasional roadside service calls or after-hours breakdowns (rotation basis).
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Inspect, diagnose, and repair diesel engines, drivetrains, brakes, suspension, and trailer systems
• Perform routine maintenance, including PMs, oil changes, tire checks, and brake services
• Utilize diagnostic tools (Cummins Insite, Noregon, etc.) to troubleshoot issues and complete repairs
• Conduct DOT inspections and ensure compliance with FMCSA standards
• Maintain accurate maintenance logs and repair records (digitally)
• Coordinate with dispatch and operations manager for truck downtime and service scheduling
• Respond to occasional roadside service calls or after-hours breakdowns (rotation basis)

Requirements

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Experience working on and troubleshooting issues with both heavy mobile equipment and diesel-powered trucks.
• 2+ years of experience working on Class 7 and 8 trucks (Freightliner, Kenworth, Peterbilt, Mack, Volvo, etc.)
• Strong knowledge of diesel engines, air brakes, electrical, and emissions systems
• Familiarity with diagnostic software and electronic logging devices (ELDs)
• Must provide your own basic tools (specialty tools provided by shop)
• Valid driver’s license required; CDL-A is a strong plus
• ASE Certification preferred but not required
• Ability to lift 50+ lbs. and work in a physically demanding environment
• Must have thorough understanding of DOT regulations.
• Mechanically inclined with great problem-solving skills.
• Works well independently and with others.
• Good communication skills.
• Organized with attention to detail.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced and stressful environment.

Education and Experience:

• Some vocational or community college with related coursework or equivalent experience, required.
• Bilingual preferred, not required.
• Current CDL license a plus.
• Mobile equipment operating experience a plus.

Physical Requirements:

• Prolonged periods standing and walking.
• Able to bend, stretch, push, pull, and move as needed to reach, clean, and service machinery.
• Must be able to visually inspect machines.
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
