Role Overview :

As a Diesel Mechanic, you will be responsible for minor and major repairs and maintenance of heavy equipment vehicles (i.e., snow-fighting equipment and dump trucks), light vehicles (roadside trucks), and tools. Additionally, you will diagnose and resolve problems in compliance with current procedures and safety practices. You may also assist in major overhauls of gasoline or diesel engines, and repair difficult and complex automotive problems (i.e., replacement or repair of pistons, rings, crankshafts, medium and heavy-duty automatic transmissions, single and twin countershaft manual transmissions). Diesel Mechanic’s are responsible for providing their tools to complete the outlined job duties.

Location :

This position is located in INDOT’s Cloverdale Area.

CDL Positions :

Candidates with a current CDL will earn an additional $1 per hour for this position. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL, with training provided by INDOT, and will then earn an additional $1 per hour upon successfully obtaining their CDL.

Salary :

This position traditionally starts at an hourly rateof $24.26an hour. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Rebuild, replace, and/or repair major parts on cars and light trucks, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment (e.g., exhaust system, fuel injection, electrical systems, transmission, drive train, mechanical and air suspension, charging systems, air, and hydraulic brakes).
  • Performs minor repairs or other related mechanical work (e.g., adjusts valves; changes and repairs all types of tires; cleans or replaces diesel injectors; repairs or replaces hydraulic components.
  • Install snowplow blades and make repairs on damaged plow assemblies.
  • Perform minor body repair work.
  • Maintain Equipment Management System (EMS) records on parts used and work performed on equipment and orders and/or pick up parts.
  • Service and repair of highway equipment in the field; use welding equipment to straighten and fabricate metal.
  • Recognize performance issues for both gas and diesel engines and properly diagnose them.
  • Inspect vehicles/equipment for damage.
  • Perform winter operations duties including snow and ice removal.
  • Operate snowplow, tow truck, or other equipment; repair mowers and sharpens blades; pump gasoline and diesel fuel and maintain daily records of same.
  • Perform service calls on the roadside when equipment is disabled.
  • Attend appropriate training school, safety meetings, mechanic meetings, or related meetings.
  • Order and/or pick up parts when required by the supervisor.
  • Provide service and repair of vehicles and equipment on an emergency basis.
  • Coordinates work assigned by the Shop Foreman and reports problems as needed.
  • Workday attendance at assigned worksite(s) is an essential function of this position.

What You'll Need for Success:

The ideal candidate in this role should minimally have either

  • a High School Diploma or HSE diploma,
  • at least 1+ years of experience applying the below, outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role.
  • Must possess a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain one with the first 90 days of employment.
  • Thorough knowledge of automobile functions, systems, and repairs.
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to instruct others in the use of diagnostic equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of appropriate safety precautions.
  • Ability to understand the system of mechanical procedures.
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports: This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
