Job summary

XPO Logistics, Inc. is hiring a Diesel Mechanic in Chicago Heights, IL. You will perform routine maintenance on heavy diesel equipment, diagnose issues, and repair propulsion and hydraulic systems, while following DOT and EPA regulations.

The role offers day-to-day work on site with shift differentials for 2nd and 3rd shifts, tool and uniform provisions, and benefits starting day one. Strong preference for ASE/MACS and related certifications.

Qualifications

• 2 years experience or a tech school cert in heavy-duty truck/trailer maintenance.
• EPA HVAC Refrigerant Recovery Certification within 90 days of hire.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Welding and basic mechanical skills required.
• Basic hand tools for heavy-duty maintenance required.
• Basic computer skills.
• Brake inspection qualification per FMCSA 396.25.
• Vehicle inspection qualification per FMCSA 396.19.
• Able to work days, evenings, nights, and weekends.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance on class 6–8 diesel equipment, forklifts, and trailing equipment.
• Inspect and service equipment, including access to hard-to-reach areas.
• Repair or rebuild parts of various equipment systems.
• Troubleshoot and diagnose issues and perform repairs accordingly.
• Abide by DOT, EPA, Interstate Authority, OSHA and related regulations.
• Move trailers on site and maintain a clean, safe work area.
• Enter job times and parts on repair orders.

Job description

What you’ll need to succeed as a Diesel Mechanic at XPO

• 2 years of experience in tractor and trailer inspection and repair or a technical school degree with certification in heavy-duty truck/trailer maintenance
• Obtain EPA HVAC Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling Certification within 90 days of hire (ASE, MACS or equivalent)
• A valid driver’s license
• Basic welding skills (Oxy/Acetylene, MIG and ARC) and mechanical skills
• Basic hand tools required for heavy-duty trailer and tractor maintenance
• Basic computer skills
• Brake inspection qualified as defined in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations, Section 396.25
• Vehicle Inspection qualified as defined in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations, Section 396.19
• Available to work a variety of shifts, including days, evenings, nights, and weekends

Preferred qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent work-related or military experience
• Prior mechanical experience such as automotive or skilled trades
• Previous or current ASE certifications
• Experience with trailer repair, diesel engine system diagnostics and preventive maintenance for tractor technicians
• Able to diagnose and repair vehicle air conditioning systems

About the Diesel Mechanic jo b

Pay, benefits and more:

• Expected pay range: $36.22 to $39.96 per hour. Pay is on an annual step progression. Actual compensation may vary due to factors such as experience and skill set.
• Monday – Friday operation
• $1/hour increase for 2nd shift, 3:00pm-11:30pm
• $3/hour increase for 3rd shift, 11:00PM-7:30AM

• Tool allowance of $400 per quarter

What you’ll do on a typical day:

• Perform routine maintenance functions and adjustments on all types of class 6 through 8 diesel equipment, forklifts, and trailing equipment
• Access any of the equipment to perform necessary maintenance, including inspecting and performing work in, on or under part of the equipment
• Repair or rebuild all or parts of various equipment systems
• Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment and component issues and perform repairs accordingly
• Abide by DOT, EPA, Interstate Authority, OSHA and other rules and regulations
• Conduct safety inspections on equipment and prepare safety documentation as neededMaintain proficiency with equipment and technologies that enhance productivity
• Move trailers throughout the property, operating a hostler in all types of weather
• Enter job times and parts on repair orders to track activity
• Operate specialized tooling and vehicles
• Ensure the work area is always clean, safe, and organized
• Interact with operations and shop management

Diesel Mechanics are required to:

• Frequently lift up to 50 lbs. and occasionally lift more than 75 lbs.
• Safely walk and stand for extended periods on various surfaces that may be uneven or slippery, including working outdoors in inclement weather
• Reach (including above your head), bend, climb, push, pull, twist, squat and kneel
• Walk and stand for extended periods on a loading dock that is not climate-controlled and may be slippery
