Job summary

XPO is seeking a Diesel Mechanic in Burnsville, MN to inspect, maintain, diagnose, and repair heavy-duty tractors and trailers. You will work across class 6–8 equipment, exercising safety, accuracy, and efficiency in a dynamic service environment.

Applicants should have 2 years of tractor/trailer experience or a relevant technical degree, EPA HVAC certification within 90 days, and ASE credentials preferred. Expect shift diversity, competitive pay, and full health and retirement benefits.

• 2 years of tractor and trailer inspection/repair or technical school with heavy-duty maintenance certification
• EPA HVAC Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling Certification within 90 days of hire
• Valid driver’s license
• Basic welding skills (Oxy/Acetylene, MIG, ARC)
• Basic hand tools for heavy-duty trailer and tractor maintenance
• Basic computer skills
• Brake inspection per FMCSA 396.25
• Vehicle inspection per FMCSA 396.19
• Able to work days, evenings, nights, weekends

Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance on class 6–8 diesel equipment, forklifts, and trailing equipment
• Inspect equipment and perform required repairs or rebuilds
• Troubleshoot and diagnose issues and complete repairs
• Follow DOT, EPA, Interstate Authority, OSHA rules
• Conduct safety inspections and document results
• Maintain equipment proficiency with tools/tech that boost productivity
• Move trailers and operate a hostler in all weather
• Log job times and parts on repair orders
• Use specialized tooling and vehicles
• Keep work area clean, safe and organized
• Coordinate with operations and shop management

What you’ll need to succeed as a Diesel Mechanic at XPO

• 2 years of experience in tractor and trailer inspection and repair or a technical school degree with certification in heavy-duty truck/trailer maintenance
• Obtain EPA HVAC Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling Certification within 90 days of hire (ASE, MACS or equivalent)
• A valid driver’s license

• Brake inspection qualified as defined in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations, Section 396.25
• Vehicle Inspection qualified as defined in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations, Section 396.19
• Available to work a variety of shifts, including days, evenings, nights, and weekends

Preferred qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent work-related or military experience
• Prior mechanical experience such as automotive or skilled trades
• Previous or current ASE certifications
• Experience with trailer repair, diesel engine system diagnostics and preventive maintenance for tractor technicians
• Able to diagnose and repair vehicle air conditioning systems

About the Diesel Mechanic job

Pay, benefits and more:

• Expected pay range: $37.04 to $39.96 per hour. Pay is on an annual step progression. Actual compensation may vary due to factors such as experience and skill set.
• $1/hour increase for 2nd shift, 2:00PM-10:30PM Monday-Friday
• $3/hour increase for 3rd shift , 10:00PM-6:00AM Monday-Friday

What you’ll do on a typical day:

• Perform routine maintenance functions and adjustments on all types of class 6 through 8 diesel equipment, forklifts, and trailing equipment
• Access any of the equipment to perform necessary maintenance, including inspecting and performing work in, on or under part of the equipment
• Repair or rebuild all or parts of various equipment systems
• Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment and component issues and perform repairs accordingly
• Abide by DOT, EPA, Interstate Authority, OSHA and other rules and regulations
• Conduct safety inspections on equipment and prepare safety documentation as needed
• Maintain proficiency with equipment and technologies that enhance productivity
• Move trailers throughout the property, operating a hostler in all types of weather
• Enter job times and parts on repair orders to track activity
• Operate specialized tooling and vehicles
• Ensure the work area is always clean, safe, and organized
• Interact with operations and shop management

Diesel Mechanics are required to:

• Frequently lift up to 50 lbs. and occasionally lift more than 75 lbs.
• Safely walk and stand for extended periods on various surfaces that may be uneven or slippery, including working outdoors in inclement weather
• Reach (including above your head), bend, climb, push, pull, twist, squat and kneel
• Walk and stand for extended periods on a loading dock that is not climate-controlled and may be slippery
