Job summary

Garelick Farms is hiring an experienced diesel fleet mechanic to perform maintenance and repairs on our on-site fleet in Rensselaer, NY. You will work independently and with supervision to ensure vehicles are in optimal operating condition.

The role emphasizes diagnosing issues, performing repairs, and coordinating with drivers while following safety and DOT guidelines. We offer PTO, comprehensive benefits, uniforms, life insurance, and shift differentials.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • 2–4 years of mechanic/maintenance experience preferred.
  • Reefer/Refrigeration maintenance experience preferred.
  • Mechanic certification, CDL, refrigeration license or related certifications preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic to moderately difficult vehicle maintenance, component replacements, and repairs.
  • Maintain, repair, inspect, and replace brakes, steering, transmissions, tires, and related systems as needed.
  • Diagnose mechanical and electronic problems using diagnostic tools.
  • Interact with drivers to identify issues and determine root causes.
  • Adhere to safety, DOT, and SOP guidelines; complete work orders accurately.

GENERAL PURPOSE

Perform the majority of truck and/or trailer maintenance and repairs with minimal support of others, ensuring that equipment is available and in optimal operating condition.

Work with the assistance of other mechanics or supervisors when performing highly technical or intricate diagnostic repairs.

Work under minimal supervision, exercising some judgment and discretion in resolving issues or making repairs.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform basic to moderately difficult vehicle and preventive maintenance, component replacements, and repairs
  • Maintain, repair, inspect, and/or replace brakes, steering mechanisms, springs, air bags, lights, air conditioners, water, fuel, oil, air filters, coolant and chemicals, transmissions, tire air pressure, tire tread, tires, chassis, drive lines, u-joints, air tanks, batteries, air lines, power cords, wipers, mirrors, drive train components, or other equipment as necessary
  • Perform facility maintenance duties
  • Use shop management system and other electronic systems available
  • Diagnose mechanical and electronic problems, using diagnostic computer when applicable
  • Identify root cause of failures/conditions and perform repairs as required
  • Interact with drivers to properly determine nature of complaint once assigned a task
  • Work in accordance with all federal, state, and corporate compliance guidelines (e.g., safety, DOT)
  • Complete work orders and paperwork in a timely and accurate manner, maintaining high quality standards in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOP’s)
  • Respond to accidents or inoperable vehicles to transport equipment back to shop for repair, if appropriate
  • Keep management informed of safety, operator, and equipment observations and concerns
  • Assist in identifying opportunities to improve processes, utilizing continuous improvement mindset
  • Maintain a clean, sanitary and safe work area which may include wearing of all required personal protective equipment in designated areas, confined space safety, safe chemical handling, fall restraints, etc.
  • Assist and mentor less experienced mechanics

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • 2 to 4 years of mechanic, maintenance, or related experience preferred but not required.
  • Reefer/Refrigeration maintenance experience preferred
  • Certification and/or License –Mechanic certification, CDL license, refrigeration license, or other relevant certifications or licensespreferred but not required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Skill with engines, anti-lock braking system, transmission, diagnostic equipment, and software
  • Basic computer skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of DOT regulations
  • Able to read and understand driver inspection reports
  • Able to assist other mechanics on complex repairs in a safe and useful manner
  • Able to operate tools, equipment, and peripheral accessories
  • Able to independently access and use internal and external maintenance documents
  • Able to work in a team environment
  • Able to perform tasks and duties without constant supervision
  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Able to follow directions
  • Able to problem solve
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be able to read, write and speak English
