Job summary

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in Durango, CO is seeking a Diesel and Equipment Mechanic I to maintain the D&SNG fleet of diesel locomotives, heavy equipment and on-track vehicles. This entry-level role works with senior mechanics in a shop and may involve work at other railroad locations.

Basic diesel/gas engine knowledge, ability to read manuals and safely operate heavy equipment are required. We offer a full-time hourly position with diverse tasks including maintenance,

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal English.
• Previous diesel and gas engine experience.
• Ability to troubleshoot, multi-task and think-on-your-feet.
• Ability to use shop tools.
• Welding, machining, or other trade skills a plus.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• Must pass pre-employment and ongoing physical exams.
• Must operate heavy equipment such as loader, forklift, and tractor.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance, inspections and repairs on diesel locomotives and on-track MOW equipment in a team environment.
• Maintain electrical systems and perform basic diagnostics.
• Repair and inspect equipment including various manufacturer engines and components.
• Carry out maintenance on track cars and other railroad equipment.
• Complete required FRA, OSHA, and company documentation.
• Assemble/disassemble parts and perform basic servicing and inspections.
• Adhere to safety rules and work procedures.
