Job summary

Midwest Transit Equipment in Kankakee, IL is hiring a Full Time Diesel Mechanic to service gas and diesel buses and vans. The role requires strong knowledge of light- to medium-duty vehicle maintenance and a commitment to safety and quality.

Responsibilities include diagnosing mechanical defects, performing preventive maintenance, major engine/transmission overhauls, and keeping accurate service records. Valid CDL B with air brake endorsement and manufacturer certifications are required.

Qualifications

• 4+ years medium-duty bus experience
• 100% certification for all manufacturer trainings (Cummins/Navistar/Braun)
• CDL Class B with air brake endorsement
• Must own set of tools
• Knowledge of pupil transportation DOT inspections
• Excellent verbal and written communication
• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

Responsibilities

• Diagnose mechanical defects and perform preventive maintenance
• Major overhaul of engines and transmissions
• Service/maintain brakes, air compressors, fuel systems, ignitions, HVAC, and wheelchair lifts
• Service/maintain vehicle air conditioning units
• Inspect/repair school buses per DOT requirements
• Keep records of time and materials used
• Utilize diagnostic software and Navistar portals
• Work knowledge of Navistar IC Bus and related products
