Classification: Exempt

Location: Maintenance – 8800 Corridor Road, Annapolis Junction, MD

Reports To: Maintenance Manager

Salary: $79,500 - $83,000 (DOQ)

Schedule: 7:00 PM – 3:30 AM (19:00 – 03:30)

Transit Management of Central Maryland (TMCM) d.b.a. the Regional Transportation Agency (RTA) of Central Maryland manages and operates public transportation in Anne Arundel County, Howard County, Northern Prince George’s County, and the City of Laurel. RTA employs 150 staff at our Annapolis Junction location.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The RTA seeks an experienced Diesel Bus Mechanic Shift Supervisor to manage mechanics and supervise maintenance for a fleet of 80 transit buses and service vehicles.

This role requires knowledge and skills in diagnosing and repairing automotive, transit, and commercial vehicles, including the use of hand tools, diagnostic equipment, laptops, scan tools, gauges, micrometers, etc. Shift Supervisors will create, monitor, update, and close repair orders in the management system, ensuring effective use by employees. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is necessary. The individual must lead, communicate effectively with employees and customers, and ensure repairs are timely and of high quality. Responsibilities also include daily safety inspections, maintaining standards, and managing service lane employees.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Demonstrate professional and ethical conduct
  • Diagnose and perform vehicle repairs, managing the work of mechanics:
    • Engine repair and diagnosis
    • Engine emission components (State certification)
    • Driveline components
    • Electrical/electronic components
    • Brakes, suspension, steering, exhaust
    • Cab/chassis
    • Hydraulic diagnosis and repair
    • Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning
    • Proficiency with scan tools and laptops
  • Ensure work orders are generated and completed correctly
  • Select appropriate repair actions
  • Evaluate work before vehicle release and perform road tests as needed
  • Ensure safe tool use, shop safety, cleanliness, and environmental compliance
  • Assign, monitor, and approve team work
  • Perform road calls and emergency services
  • Move vehicles safely within the shop
  • Communicate professionally with customers, team, and supervisors
  • Participate in safety and educational training
  • Prioritize workload and communicate repair procedures clearly

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • A/C 609 certification
  • Valid Class B or higher CDL with Passenger endorsement and no Airbrakes restriction
  • Appropriate mechanic’s tool set
  • At least three years of automotive, heavy equipment, or transit repair experience
  • Experience monitoring PM schedules and operating repair shop equipment
  • Excellent communication skills and relationship-building abilities

Special Requirements:

  • At least three ASE Heavy Duty/Transit certifications within six months of employment; Master certification encouraged within two years
  • Forklift certification within one year

Physical & Working Conditions

  • Ability to move around the office, access files, communicate effectively
  • Intermittent sitting, standing, lifting (up to 50 pounds regularly, over 100 pounds occasionally), climbing, and manual dexterity
  • Visual and sensory abilities, including close and distance vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment
  • Exposure to noise, chemicals, odors, gases, poor ventilation, weather, dirt, grease, dust, machinery
