Job summary

A municipal employer in South Carolina seeks a Diesel Bus Mechanic to handle repairs and maintenance of vehicles, including gasoline and diesel systems. Job Summary

Under regular direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, performs skilled work involving the maintenance and repair of all vehicle/bus systems, including gasoline and diesel engines, battery electric vehicle drivetrains, transmissions, 12- and 24-volt electrical systems, engine and transmission computer systems, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, and brake systems. Following Agency Maintenance Plan, performs A, B, C, and D preventative maintenance routines on vehicles and equipment. Assists in installing communications and telematic equipment into vehicles, including radios, camera systems, GPS equipment and ITS. Follows work tasking on work orders and documents all work as required. This role serves as a developmental step toward the Senior Diesel Bus Mechanic position and includes periodic assessments to evaluate readiness for advancement.

Essential Functions
  • Perform Repairs and Complete Diagnostic Troubleshooting: Perform complex repairs on gasoline, diesel, and electric vehicles as well as shop/facility equipment, including work on diesel/gasoline engines, electric drive motors, high-voltage vehicle electrical systems, electronically controlled transmissions, ride height suspension systems, suspension linkages, steering linkages, kingpins, wheel bearings, tires, airbrake systems (including anti-lock braking systems), hydraulic brake systems (including ABS), multiplexing electrical systems, lighting systems, Bendix air systems, heating and air conditioning systems, bus fare collection systems, and ITS. Follow OEM diagnostic processes and procedures to perform troubleshooting. Use diagnostic software (including Cummins Insite, Allison DOC, Wabco, Proterra Diagnostic, ViriCiti, Genfare, and Shopkey), multimeters, specialized tools, test gauges, and integrated on-board maintenance systems to identify defects. Determine an effective repair method and complete the repair to OEM specifications. Ensure the vehicle or equipment is properly repaired and safe for its intended use. Contribute to safety issue reporting and maintain accurate service records in fleet maintenance software.
  • Conduct Preventive Maintenance: Perform A, B, C, and D preventive maintenance services and safety inspections on gasoline, diesel, and electric vehicles/buses as well as shop and facility equipment. Address and complete necessary repairs identified during PM before returning the vehicle to service. Use fleet maintenance software to complete electronic check sheets and ensure the vehicle is safe before return to service.
  • Assist in Installation and Repair of Specialized Equipment: Assist in installation and repair of cellular data systems/modems/Wi-Fi, emergency lighting, two-way radios, computer/mobile data terminal mounts, fare collection systems, ITS, GPS equipment, body add-ons, and decals. Troubleshoot, repair, or replace these items as needed.
Job Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Over two (2) years of hands-on vehicle repair experience, including at least one (1) year working on transit buses or diesel engines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working on diesel, electric, and gasoline powered vehicles.
  • ASE certifications related to Heavy Duty Trucks, Transit, and Automobiles.
Driver's License Requirements
  • Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License at hire.
  • Valid South Carolina Class B Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) with passenger endorsement within three weeks of hire, or the equivalent CLP from their state of residence.
  • Valid South Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement within three months of hire, or the equivalent CDL from their state of residence.
  • Applicants who do not intend to relocate to South Carolina must reside in a neighboring state (Georgia or North Carolina) and meet the same CDL requirements as residents of South Carolina. Employees residing in a neighboring state must provide to the City of Greenville an annual Motor Vehicle Record from their state’s DMV at their own cost.
Performance Requirements
  • Knowledge of electrical systems, air systems, chassis and suspension, HVAC, diesel engines and transmissions.
  • Failure diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance practices for buses and heavy vehicles.
  • Procedures and methods for testing, repair and adjustment of radio and other electronic communications equipment.
  • Genfare fare collection system repair and maintenance.
  • Intelligent Transit System repair and maintenance.
  • OSHA and safe working practices and procedures.
  • Electric Vehicle High Voltage Power Systems & ARC Flash Training.
Ability to
  • Use diagnostic equipment and tools, including computers, gauges, and various handheld, mechanical and electronic testing devices.
  • Operate revenue and non-revenue vehicles in and around bus garages and public rights-of-way.
  • Apply technical skills effectively with independent judgment to minimize downtime.
  • Organize work to minimize downtime.
  • Read and follow technical manuals, troubleshooting guides, and procedures.
  • Write reports and emails with proper grammar and formatting.
  • Understand and apply fractions, percentages, ratios, and measurements.
  • Use hand tools, diagnostic equipment, electrical/pneumatic tools, A/C recovery machines, forklift, calipers, micrometers, drill press, and hydraulic presses.
  • Utilize Cummins Insight, Allison DOC, Proterra Diagnostics, and Luminator software.
  • Work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, holidays, split shifts, and overtime.
Working Conditions
  • Primary work location: Fleet maintenance shop.
  • Protective equipment: Steel-toe shoes, safety glasses, ear protection, and gloves.
  • Environmental/Health and Safety Factors: Occasional exposure to environmental hazards; potential for extreme temperatures, wetness, humidity, respiratory hazards, noise, vibration; mechanical, chemical, electrical hazards; and physical danger.
  • Physical Demands: Constant standing, dexterity, lifting and carrying, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, hearing; very heavy lifting possible.
  • Mental Demands: Time pressure, changing tasks, irregular schedule/overtime, multitasking, teamwork; occasional emergencies.
