Job summary

XPO Logistics, Inc. is seeking a Mechanic Apprentice to perform routine maintenance on heavy-duty diesel equipment, trailers, and associated systems. The role requires 1 year of experience or a technical school certificate, a valid driver's license, and willingness to work a variety of shifts.

You will engage in safety inspections and coordinate with shop management to ensure timely repairs. Additionally, you will gain hands-on experience in diagnostics, tool usage, and maintenance compliance

Qualifications

• 1 year experience in tractor/trailer inspection and repair or tech school degree with certification
• Valid driver’s license
• Available for days, evenings, weekends shifts
• Brake inspection qualified per FMCSA 396.25
• Vehicle inspection qualified per FMCSA 396.19
• Basic hand tools required for heavy-duty maintenance

Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance on heavy-duty diesel equipment, forklifts, and trailers per schedules
• Follow DOT, EPA, OSHA and related rules as required
• Access equipment areas to perform maintenance and inspections
• Repair or rebuild equipment systems
• Conduct safety inspections and document results
• Move trailers using a hostler in various weather conditions
• Enter job times and parts on repair orders
• Operate specialized tooling and vehicles
• Maintain a clean, safe, organized work area
• Interact with operations and shop management

What you’ll need to succeed as a Mechanic Appre ntice at XPO

• 1 year of experience in tractor and trailer inspection and repair -OR- a technical school degree with certification in heavy-duty truck/trailer maintenance
• A valid driver’s license
• Available to work a variety of shifts, including days, evenings, and weekends
• Brake inspection qualified as defined in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations, Section 396.25
• Vehicle Inspection qualified as defined in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations, Section 396.19
• Basic hand tools required for heavy-duty trailer and tractor maintenance

Preferred qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent work-related or military experience
• Previous or current ASE certifications
• Prior mechanical experience such as automotive or skilled trades
• Basic computer skillsBasic welding skills such as Oxy/Acetylene, ARC and MIG

Pay, benefits and more:

• Expected pay range: $28.27 to $30.81 per hour. Pay is on an annual step progression. Actual compensation may vary due to factors such as experience and skill set.

What you’ll do on a typical day:

• Perform routine maintenance functions and adjustments on all types of heavy-duty diesel equipment, forklifts, and trailing equipment in compliance with the manufacturer, DOT, and company schedules
• Apply knowledge and work by DOT, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Interstate Authority, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other rules and regulations, as required
• Access any area of the equipment or vehicle to perform necessary maintenance, including inspecting and performing work in, on or under parts of vehicles and trailers
• Repair or rebuild equipment systems
• Conduct safety inspections of equipment and prepare safety documentation
• Move trailers throughout the property, operating a hostler in all types of weather
• Enter job times and parts on repair orders to track activity
• Operate specialized tooling and vehicles
• Ensure the work area is always clean, safe, and organized
• Interact with operations and shop management

Mechanic Apprentices are required to:

• Lift objects of various shapes, sizes, and weights frequently up to 50 lbs. And occasionally greater than 75 lbs.
• Safely walk and stand for extended periods on various surfaces that may be uneven or slippery, including working outdoors in inclement weather
• Reach (including above your head), bend, climb, push, pull, twist, squat and kneel
