Job description

THE POSITION

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is seeking enthusiastic individuals for the role of Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainees within the Allegheny County Maintenance Organization. This opportunity is ideal for those interested in repairing and maintaining diesel and construction machinery. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, you will repair and maintain various vehicles, including cars, trucks, and heavy machinery. Responsibilities include servicing equipment such as sweepers, mixers, and front-end loaders, identifying repairs, and replacing components like shock absorbers, transmissions, clutches, and brakes. You will assist with wheel balancing, alignment, minor body repairs, electrical system repairs, and perform preventative maintenance. The work also involves conducting diagnostics, tune-ups, tire changes, and maintaining engine and system adjustments. Additionally, you will participate in safety inspections, ensure regulatory compliance, and maintain accurate records. You will learn to repair motorized hand tools and report equipment issues, contributing to a safe work environment by following safety procedures and identifying hazards.

Work Schedule and Additional Information
  • Full-time employment
  • Hours: 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch
  • Travel, overtime, and shift work required; hours may vary seasonally
  • Telework is not available for this position
  • Salary: Starting salary may be non-negotiable in some cases
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

Qualifications:

  • Two years as a Tradesman Helper in the automotive field, or
  • Graduation from a post-high school diesel technology program at an accredited trade or technical school, or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training

Conditions of Employment:

  • Possession of an active Class A or B Commercial Driver's Permit or License may be required on the first day
  • An active Medical Examiner's Certificate may be required
  • CDL endorsements and certifications may be necessary to operate specific equipment
  • Must obtain and maintain a Pennsylvania Class 1, 4, or 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during probation
  • Operation of vehicles with manual transmission required
  • Passing the Department of Transportation's New Mechanic Training course may be required
  • Position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations
