Job summary

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania seeks a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic to maintain, repair, and inspect diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment for the Department of Transportation. You will repair engines, preventively maintain machinery, perform safety inspections, diagnose using tools, and support a safety-focused team on site.

Qualified applicants will have a trainee program or equivalent experience, a valid CDL and required certifications.

Qualifications

• Completion of required training or equivalent experience in diesel and construction equipment repair.
• Experience diagnosing and repairing diesel engines and heavy equipment.
• Active CDL and required medical/certifications on day one of employment.

Responsibilities

• Repair engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical and hydraulic systems.
• Perform preventative maintenance, diagnostics and tune-ups.
• Ensure safety standards and complete state inspections and paperwork.
• Diagnose problems using diagnostic tools and determine repair methods.
• Maintain a clean, safe worksite and support team during major repairs.
• Follow procedures and assist coworkers as needed.

As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic for the Department of Transportation, you take on important repairs and inspections that support daily transportation needs. This position focuses on maintaining, repairing, and inspecting a wide variety of diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment. The work supports the safe and reliable operation of essential transportation machinery. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:

• Equipment Repair: Repair engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical systems, and hydraulic components
• Preventative Maintenance: Conduct regular maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and tune-ups on assigned equipment
• Safety Compliance: Perform state inspections, complete required paperwork, and ensure vehicles meet safety standards
• Technical Diagnosis: Use diagnostic tools to identify problems, determine repair methods, and maintain small motorized equipment
• Worksite Safety: Maintain a clean work area, follow safety procedures, and take proactive steps to avoid hazards
• Team Support: Assist coworkers with major repairs and demonstrate proper repair techniques when needed

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Some travel, overtime, and shift work may be required. Work hours are subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
• Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

• This position requires possession of an active Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
• This position requires possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations on the first day of employment.
• This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
• This position requires possession of an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) within the probationary period.

Additional Requirements:

• Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
• This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
• You must be able to perform essential job functions.
