Job summary

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is seeking a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic to repair, maintain, and inspect diesel-powered vehicles and construction equipment to keep state fleets operating safely and efficiently.

You will diagnose problems, perform preventive maintenance, complete safety inspections, and make field adjustments as needed, with a 7:00 AM–3:00 PM schedule, Monday through Friday.

This role focuses on repairing, maintaining, and inspecting diesel-powered and construction equipment to ensure safe performance and long service life. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:

• Vehicle Repairs: Repair engines, transmissions, brakes, clutches, shock absorbers, and electrical components on cars, trucks, tractors, and construction equipment
• Preventive Maintenance: Carry out diagnostics, tune-ups, tire changes, cleaning, servicing and routine adjustments to reduce wear and extend equipment life
• Safety Inspections: Perform official state safety and emissions inspections, complete paperwork, and road test vehicles to ensure compliance
• Equipment Diagnostics: Identify mechanical problems using diagnostic tools and determine repair methods, procedures, parts, and tools needed
• Field Adjustments: Make routine field adjustments and minor repairs to support safe operation outside the garage
• Environmental Compliance: Follow environmental protection requirements and participate in required training

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) program; or
• Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

• This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed, or equivalent.
• This position requires an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
• This position requires possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations on the first day of employment.

Additional Requirements:

• This position requires operation of vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission.
• Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
• All employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders within the probationary period.
• This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
• You must be able to perform essential job functions.
