The Dialysis Technician (Clinical Hemodialysis Technician or CHT) provides specialized care for patients undergoing dialysis at Mayo Clinic. Working alongside a Registered Nurse, the Tech performs basic dialysis tasks such as initiating and terminating treatments, caring for patients during procedures, and maintaining dialysis equipment to ensure safety. Additional duties delegated by the RN or supervisor may include further patient care tasks and supply inventory management. Attention to detail and adherence to written instructions are essential. The Dialysis Technician is a vital part of the healthcare team in dialysis services.

The Clinical Hemodialysis Technician collaborates within the Mayo Clinic Dialysis Services (MCDS) system to meet patient and family care needs. Under RN supervision, responsibilities include direct patient care, basic hemodialysis techniques, equipment maintenance, water treatment monitoring, vascular access oversight, machine cleaning/disinfection, blood sample collection, and performing laboratory tests and quality controls. Participation in quality improvement activities is also expected. The technician performs skills within legal scope for unlicensed nursing personnel, as outlined in the Core Curriculum for Dialysis Technicians and Mayo Clinic policies.
High school diploma or equivalent required. Candidates must have completed a certified nursing assistant training course, have one year of direct patient care experience in a healthcare setting, be an RN student with one semester of clinical coursework, or have completed a Dialysis Technician training program. Successful completion of Ishihara's color blindness test is required before employment.
Preferred qualifications include CHT certification and experience. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, teamwork experience, computer proficiency, familiarity with electronic medical records, adaptability to unpredictable situations, and flexible working hours are also preferred.
License/Certification:
Valid Driver’s License.
BLS (Basic Life Support) certification is preferred, with acceptable certificates from the American Heart Association (“BLS Provider”) or American Red Cross (“Basic Life Support” or “CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Healthcare Providers”).
Successful completion of the Clinical Hemodialysis Technician national certification exam is required within 18 months of hire if hired after October 14, 2008, offered by the State, BONENT, or NNCC.
