Job summary

Fresenius Medical Care in Birmingham, AL seeks a dialysis patient care technician to join our team. You will support RN supervision, assist in setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, and help maintain a safe, clean environment while delivering high-quality patient care.

You will monitor vital signs, document treatment data, assist with vascular access evaluation, and participate in CQI activities to improve patient outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Welcome assigned patients and inquire as to their wellbeing since their last treatment.
• Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform vascular access cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated.
• Obtain pre and post treatment vital signs and weight; perform vascular access evaluation pre-treatment.
• Initiate dialysis treatment per orders including QB and QD.
• Monitor patients' response to dialysis therapy and document.
• Record vital signs and treatment parameters on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initials.
• Discontinue dialysis and evaluate patient prior to venous access termination.
• Obtain hemostasis and apply dressings; document discharge.
• Perform and document pre/post dialysis evaluation, weight, and vitals.
• Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for UF and modeling.
• Ensure safety alarms are enabled, including NVL 160.
• Document all treatment data accurately; progress notes if applicable.
• Report significant changes to the nurse or supervisor.
• Observe patient and machine safety checks; report unusual findings.
• Monitor vascular access pressures and intervene as needed; document findings.
• Obtain prescribed labs and prepare specimens.
• Clean spills per policy; maintain clean environment.
• Prepare supplies and equipment to prevent wastage.
• Monitor patients performing self-care under RN supervision.
