Summary
Employees qualified to work in the MRI modality possess expert specialization at this grade level for Radiology Service at Chalmer's P. Wylie VAACC in Columbus, Ohio. The MRSO operates with full responsibility for training, developing, and directing the MR safety program. Duties include coordinating MR safety committee meetings, evaluating hospital equipment for MR safety, and overseeing employee and patient MR screening programs.
Qualifications
Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens are unavailable, in accordance with VA Policy.
- Education: Completion of a full-time, 24-month or equivalent post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or associate degree, accredited by JRCERT or recognized agencies.
- Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by ARRT (R).
- Advanced ARRT certification is required for CT, MRI, or Mammography duties performed independently.
- English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
- Preferred Experience: MR Safety Officer (MRSO), with knowledge of superconducting magnets, their physics, and related safety practices.
Additional Requirements:
- Demonstrated knowledge of MR safety requirements, ability to develop safety protocols, and train staff.
- Knowledge of hazards related to magnetic fields, implants, devices, and foreign bodies, with measures to mitigate risks.
- Ability to develop and enforce safety procedures and train multidisciplinary staff.
Physical Requirements:
- Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over), straight pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, walking, bending, rapid coordination, near vision, hearing.
Duties
- Operate superconducting MRI units, develop techniques, and collaborate with medical and engineering staff.
- Provide patient care tailored to adult and geriatric patients, position and monitor patients, and ensure safety from magnetic fields.
- Coordinate with radiologists and physicists to optimize imaging parameters, program technical factors, and monitor examination quality.
- Assist in calibration, troubleshooting, and maintenance of MRI equipment, and maintain logs and quality control programs.
- Stay updated with field developments, attend medical education, and develop patient preparation procedures.
- Explain procedures to patients, oversee MRI safety screening, and enforce safety zones.
- Lead and document MRI safety committee meetings, evaluate equipment safety, and coordinate staff training.
- Ensure compliance with policies and regulations, and perform other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule and Benefits
- Work hours: 7:30 am - 6:00 pm, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday.
