Job summary

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking an experienced Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist for the Miami VA Healthcare System. The DRT conducts routine to moderately complex radiographic exams using fluoroscopic, digital radiography, portable, and C-Arm equipment in OR settings.

Qualified candidates will have ARRT (R) certification, 1 year of qualifying experience at GS-7 level, and education meeting JRCERT standards. The position requires English proficiency, U.S.

Qualifications

• United States Citizenship required
• English Language Proficiency: must be proficient in both written and spoken English
• Education: completion of a 24-month post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, accredited by JRCERT or recognized by DOE
• Certification: ARRT (R) certification in Advanced Radiology
• GS-8: At least 1 year of qualifying experience equivalent to GS-7 (3 years total DRT experience)
• KSAs: ability to check system operation; knowledge of calibration parameters and adjustments; knowledge of patient records; monitor physiologic changes during procedures; communicate with radiologist; knowledge of anatomy and cross-sectional imaging

Responsibilities

• Perform diagnostic imaging examinations to help diagnose and treat illnesses or injuries
• Operate imaging equipment, maintain images and records, and explain procedures to patients
• Perform CT scans of head, neck, spine, chest and body with/without contrast
• Prepare and administer contrast materials when needed for exams
• Perform image reconstructions on advanced workstations as directed
• Maintain proficiency on reconstruction techniques and keep exam records
• Ensure images transmitted to PACS and available for radiologist interpretation
• Adhere to Universal Precautions and proper patient identification

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
• English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in both written and spoken English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402 (d) - and 7407 (d)
• Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program - evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree - accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE)
• Certification: Must be certified in Advanced Radiology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology ARRT (R)
• GS-8: Experience: Completion of at least 1 year of qualifying experience equivalent to the GS-7 grade level (for a total of 3 years of DRT experience)
• Qualifying experience would include independently performing a substantially full range of duties but receive occasional oversight or direction for highly complex issues and providing services in specialized areas of radiologic technology and/or general radiologic technology services. In addition to the experience above - the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs
• Ability to check system for operation and assess acceptable performance based on established guidelines
• Knowledge of calibration parameters and the ability to make adjustments as needed
• Knowledge of patient's clinical record - diagnosis - and laboratory results
• Ability to monitor patient's physiologic changes during the procedure and keep the radiologist informed
• Skill in using tact - diplomacy - and courtesy in dealings with the customer base - patients - staff - family - visitors - and volunteers
• Knowledge of anatomy and physiology - and cross-sectional anatomy - recognizing unusual images - and determining proper positioning to best demonstrate areas of interest

• Physical Requirements: Must pass a pre-employment physical examination/evaluation as required by VA Handbook 5019
• This examination/evaluation is administered by VA Occupational Health
• This position requires moderate lifting up to 44 lbs. - carrying objects up to 15 lbs. - frequent reaching above shoulder - use of fingers - hands and legs - use of cranes and motor vehicles - walking & standing up to 8 hours - bending and climbing and able to hear whisper

Duties

• Your duties may include operating imaging equipment - keeping images and records - and working with patients to explain procedures
• Duties Include - but not limited to
• Perform computerized tomography of the head - neck - spine - chest - and body with and without the use of contrast materials
• Prepare and administers contrast materials when needed for exams
• Perform image reconstructions on advanced workstations as directed by the radiologist or as part of a given study
• Maintains proficiency on reconstruction techniques
• Maintain records and files of exams performed on patients
• Continually review new developments in the field of computerized tomography and is continually on the alert to improve quality of exams utilizing the new technologies available
• Perform scheduled Quality Control scans and measurements as indicated by computed tomography vendor
• Ensure that images are successfully transmitted to PACS and are available for Radiologic interpretation
• Perform all exams using Universal Precautions
• Properly identifies patient images so that mistaken identity of patient images does not occur
• Assure that procedure rooms are always stocked with necessary supplies with special attention to emergent equipment and supplies
• Perform digital radiography examinations of the entire body while ensuring that patients are properly attired and prepared before positioning them for requested examination
• Identify patient images using left and right markers - or any other applicable positioning indicator depending on the examination
• Perform dual-energy axial absorptiometry (DEXA) as ordered by providers for the evaluation of degenerative osteoporotic disease Perform fluoroscopic examinations which includes but not limited to - barium swallow - Esophagram - upper GI - small bowel series - barium enemas
• Perform regular scheduled quality control images and measurements as indicated by radiography equipment vendor
• Perform other administrative and imaging duties in which they are trained and competent - as assigned
• Work Schedule: Monday - Friday - 8:00 am - 4:30 pm(Note: Work schedules are determined and approved by the supervisor
• The incumbent may be required to work various shifts on a permanent or temporary basis based on facility/patient care needs).
