Overview
The Cardiovascular/Interventional Radiologic Technologist acts independently, coordinating and performing diagnostic radiology angiographic procedures, complex vascular and non‑vascular therapeutic procedures, and other advanced imaging studies. The role utilizes contrast materials as needed to achieve diagnostic and therapeutic outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Perform interventional‑vascular and diagnostic radiology procedures.
- Operate angiography equipment (fluoroscopy, C‑Arm, pressure injectors, biplane imaging, patient monitors).
- Conduct peripheral and visceral angiography of abdominal systems and extremities (renal, hepatic, mesenteric, aortic, femoral, etc.).
- Carry out therapeutic interventions such as venograms, myelograms, percutaneous nephrostomy, tumor ablation, vertebroplasty, and pain management.
- Execute vascular procedures in the operating room, including C‑Arm use and portable radiography.
- Perform myelography of the entire spine and microangiography of the spine, head, and neck using advanced fluoroscopy equipment.
- Apply surgical sterile techniques: scrub‑in prepare surgical trays, contrast, catheters, and guide wires, maintaining sterile fields and preventing contamination.
- Adhere to hospital infection control policies and manage sterilization supplies and sharps disposal.
- Collaborate closely with vascular surgeons, radiologists, and the medical team to anticipate procedural needs and maintain patient safety.
- Prepare and administer contrast media, monitoring patient reactions to prevent adverse events.
- Implement radiation safety measures, including lead protection and patient identification protocols.
- Perform emergency scans on standby or on call, 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, for vascular exams in the OR if required.
- Work schedule: Monday–Friday 7:30 am–4:00 pm with rotating shifts and on‑call duties; telework not authorized.
Qualifications
- U.S. citizenship is required; non‑citizens may be appointed only when no qualified citizens can be recruited (VA policy).
- Certification: Certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments involving CT, MRI, or mammography performed independently.
- Advanced certification signifies independent operation and demonstrated specialty competency; non‑advanced candidates may receive on‑the‑job training under supervision.
- Educational credential: Completion of a full‑time training program of at least 24 months in a post‑high‑school diagnostic radiologic technology program, accredited by JRCERT or an equivalent recognized by the Department of Education.
- Compliance with the Consumer‑Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act requirements and 42 CFR Part 75 standards.
- English language proficiency: spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d)‑(f).
- BLS certification required (may be grandfathered under VA Qualification Standard for current employees).
- Grade requirements: For GS‑9, candidates must demonstrate functional competence as an advanced DRT, including handling complex imaging and basic quality‑management duties.
- Experience: At least two years of experience at the previous grade level demonstrating the required clinical competencies.
- Preferred experience: Minimum one year in an interventional radiology hybrid surgical suite, vascular interventional radiology, and/or interventional technology, including diagnostic angiographic procedures and complex vascular/therapeutic interventions.
- Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Balance patient and staff needs while performing complex scans.
- Gather relevant information from medical records and providers.
- Assess contraindications to procedures.
- Apply basic first aid and life‑support practices related to radiography.
- Understand aseptic techniques, intravenous methods, and universal precautions.
- Provide pre‑procedural, procedural, and post‑procedural patient care.
