Job description

Solve the puzzle. Teach the team. Keep the fleet moving.

Butler County RTA is hiring a master-level Diagnostician / Mechanic Trainer, the person who figures out what’s really wrong, spells out exactly how to fix it, and makes every technician around them sharper in the process. This isn’t a production wrench role. It’s a diagnostic and teaching role for someone who has seen it all in the heavy-duty world and wants their expertise to multiply across a whole shop. If you’ve spent years under buses and trucks, you know Cummins powertrains inside and out, and you get a kick out of mentoring the next generation of techs, this is your seat.

What you’ll do
  • Be the shop’s go-to diagnostician who chases down the faults nobody else can crack, from Cummins powertrain and aftertreatment issues to electrical, electronic, and hydraulic gremlins.
  • Scope the work before the wrench turns. You’ll identify the root cause, the parts, and the exact service tasks so jobs are packaged and ready to assign the moment a technician and a bus are free.
  • Work shoulder-to-shoulder with service writers and technicians, turning your diagnosis into a clean, executable work order.
  • Teach. Coach. Level up the team. You’ll build the diagnostic skill of every technician and service writer around you, hands-on and by example.
  • Get your hands dirty when it counts: road-testing, verifying repairs, and confirming vehicles are safe to return to service.
  • Help us cut downtime by pre-staging parts and catching recurring failures before they park a bus.
Who you are
  • You’ve got serious time in the bus or truck world, and heavy-duty diesel is your home turf.
  • You know Cummins powertrains cold: engines, aftertreatment, and emissions.
  • Motorcoach experience? That moves you to the top of the stack.
  • You’d rather solve the puzzle than just turn the bolt, and you love showing others how you did it.
  • You’re fluent with diagnostic tools and software (Cummins INSITE, J1939/J1587, and the like).
  • CDL with appropriate endorsements, or the ability to get one. ASE and OEM/Cummins certifications are a big plus.
Benefits & Compensation
  • $36.00 to $44.63 per hour, depending on experience (non-exempt, overtime‑eligible)
  • 14% employer contribution to the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS)
  • Medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and short‑term disability benefits
  • Generous Paid Time Off, 29+ days per year
  • Stable, year‑round employment with consistent hours
  • Employer‑provided uniforms
  • Supportive leadership and team‑oriented culture
