This recruitment is for Diagnostic Imaging Technologist - Clinical Instructor positions throughout the Santa Clara County Health System. The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used for potential vacancies located at O'Connor Hospital, St. Louise Regional Hospital, Regional Medical Center, and Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. This may include full time, part time, and extra help/per diem opportunities. If you are interested in these opportunities, please fill out the appropriate questions.

Santa Clara Valley Healthcare (SCVH) is the second largest public health care system in California and includes three acute care hospitals, 14 clinics and 60+ specialty and sub-specialty services. Santa Clara Valley Medical Center- SCVMC is a full-service tertiary acute care teaching hospital with 699 licensed beds providing a wide range of specialized services, including Rehabilitation, Burn, Trauma, and NICU. SCVMC was ranked by U.S. News and World Report as #6 Rehabilitation Hospital in the nation and #1 in the West and designated as a 2024 High Performing hospital for Maternity Care, Heart Failure, Stroke, Hip Fracture, and Pneumonia.

O'Connor Hospital- O'Connor Hospital (OCH) is a 358 licensed bed acute care facility offering a full range of inpatient and outpatient medical, surgical and specialty programs to residents of Santa Clara County. It was founded in 1889 as one of the first hospitals in the county. OCH has grown significantly over the past five years in both its inpatient volume and its Emergency Department visits. Along with these volume increases other ancillary and clinical departments like imaging, lab, pharmacy, and respiratory have seen growth as well.

St. Louise Regional Hospital- Since 1989, St. Louise Regional Hospital (SLRH) has been caring for the residents in Santa Clara and San Benito Counties, offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient medical specialties. SLRH has 93 beds, is a Designated Primary Stroke Center, and is the only acute care hospital in the area. Located in Gilroy, SLRH maintains a CALSTAR 2 emergency helicopter base on the premises.

Regional Medical Center – Regional Medical Center (RMC) is a 258-bed hospital that is the main emergency healthcare provider for East San José, treating a wide range of critical and life-threatening conditions for more than 60 years. Since the SCVH integration of RMC effective 4/1/25, RMC has expanded the critical services including Level II trauma, Thrombectomy capable Stroke Center and STEMI care, and has been seeing an increased number of emergency visits and inpatient volume.

Typical Tasks

Duties

Positions in these classifications perform imaging procedures predominately in their respective area(s) of competency. The following is a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in this classification and is not intended to reflect all duties performed by every incumbent in this classification:

  • Develops, implements, and evaluates intern training plan;
  • Performs clinical instruction and oversees diagnostic imaging interns;
  • Manages intern rotations and schedules;
  • Conducts image critique sessions and provides technical instruction;
  • Assesses intern performance and addresses performance issues;
  • Correctly obtains and identifies images and manipulates and sends images via the Picture Archive Communication System (PACS) network;
  • Operates and trouble-shoots equipment, as necessary;
  • May perform routine administrative tasks;
  • Operates a variety of imaging and fluoroscopic equipment in performing a variety of imaging examinations independently;
  • Performs imaging procedures in the Operating Room, Trauma, Burn, Intensive Care, or other units in the hospital and outlying clinics;
  • Instructs, prepares, and positions patients and equipment for imaging procedure;
  • Computes relevant factors, selects a technique appropriate to the particular exam being performed, adjusts the equipment, and obtains images as instructed;
  • Tracks each procedure and associated supplies via the hospital information system;
  • Under direction of the Radiologist, administers contrast media;
  • Assists physician during imaging procedures;
  • Cleans and re-stocks procedure rooms and ancillary areas and helps maintain proper inventory levels;
  • May transport patients to and from the department;
  • Reviews the images, including technique, positioning, and identification (patient identification, left/right, body part, etc.);
  • Performs other assigned imaging procedures;
  • Adheres to all applicable Federal, State, and local regulations, including Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA);
  • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW), as required*;
  • Performs other related duties, as required.

Employment Standards

Education

Sufficient education, training, and experience to perform the above tasks, plus the possession and direct application of the following knowledge and abilities:

Training and Experience Note: The required knowledge and abilities are attained through two (2) years of full-time experience as a diagnostic imaging technologist, including demonstrated competence in the performance of Clinical Instructor duties.

Special Requirements

  • Possess and maintain, in good standing and without restrictions, a license issued by the State of California to practice as a Certified Radiologic Technologist (CRT).
  • Possess and maintain, in good standing and without restrictions, a California Fluoroscopy license.
  • Upon appointment, obtain a Basic Life Saving Certification (BLS), in good standing, once obtained, possess and maintain certification for the duration of employment in this classification.
  • Ability to travel to alternate locations in the course of work. If driving, possession of a valid California driver’s license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver authorization.
  • *As a condition of employment, pursuant to California Government Code Sections 3100-3109 and Local Ordinance, all County of Santa Clara employees are designated Disaster Service Workers (DSWs), including extra help. A DSW is required to complete all assigned DSW-related training, and in the event of an emergency, return to work as ordered.

  • Imaging processes and fluoroscopic techniques, methods, and equipment;
  • Safe operation and care of imaging equipment;
  • Structural and organic anatomy;
  • Methods of positioning patients for imaging procedures;
  • Principles of image processing and development;
  • Principles of radiation physics;
  • Common computer systems and applications;
  • English usage, style, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

  • Troubleshoot, document, and communicate equipment problems;
  • Provide safe and appropriate care;
  • Follow written and oral instructions;
  • Work quickly and efficiently in stressful situations;
  • Work independently with minimal supervision;
  • Maintain clinical competency and adapt to changing technologies;
  • Train new and less experienced staff;
  • Remain current in instructional techniques, as required by Joint Review Committee on Education of Radiologic Technologists (JRCERT);
  • Read and understand material safety data sheets and other safety communications;
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, at all levels, including colleagues, the public, and representatives of other agencies.

Physical Requirements

  • Stand and sit for long periods of time and exercise a moderate amount of physical exertion, stamina, and manual dexterity in the handling of patients and equipment;
  • Assist, support, lift, and transfer patients in a safe manner.
