Job summary

Oklahoma State University – OSU-Stillwater seeks a skilled Diagnostic Imaging Technician to perform radiographs, CT, MRI, NM, and ultrasound under radiologists and clinicians. You will document exams, maintain records, and ensure ALARA safety standards.

You will instruct veterinary students in patient positioning, assist with emergency on-call duties within 30 minutes, and help maintain room stock and cleanliness. Promotional opportunities may exist through career development.

Qualifications

  • Required qualifications include: an associate's degree or higher in veterinary tech or related field; RVT/RT certification; 2+ years diagnostic imaging experience for DI Tech I/RT experience; 4 years for DI Tech II; 6 years for DI Tech III; 8 years for DI Specialist.
  • Experience with radiography, CT, MRI, and/or nuclear medicine is preferred; ability to position animals and assist with lifting is important.

Responsibilities

  • Perform imaging studies (radiographs, CT, NM, MRI and/or ultrasound) on animal patients and document completed exams.
  • Instruct veterinary students in patient positioning and radiology technique.
  • Maintain safety per ALARA and radiation safety policies; keep room clean and stocked.
  • Complete routine administrative duties and be on-call within 30 minutes for emergencies.

About This Position

Perform imaging on animals of all species with compassionate and appropriate patient care. Perform imaging studies which may include Radiographs, CT, NM, MRI and/or Ultrasound exams on patients as requested by radiologists and/or other clinicians, documenting the completed exams. Maintain records and perform routine quality control associated with each modality. Instruct and assist veterinary students in positioning of patients for routine, special, and/or emergency procedures. Model radiation safety and follow ALARA guidelines and university radiation safety standards and policies. Maintain stock and cleanliness of assigned room(s). Perform minor administrative duties. Complete other tasks that are assigned or become necessary. If on emergency duty, must be available and on site within 30 minutes and must be willing to fill in, in an emergency situation. Promotional opportunities may be available through established career development plan.

Required Qualifications
  • Associate's (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)
  • DI Tech I: Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) with two years of diagnostic experience; or Radiological Technologist (ARRT) or Sonographer (ARDMS)
  • DI Tech II: Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) with four years of diagnostic experience; or Radiological Technologist (ARRT) or Sonographer (ARDMS) with two years of diagnostic imaging experience.
  • DI Tech III: Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) with six years of diagnostic experience; or Radiological Technologist (ARRT) or Sonographer (ARDMS) with four years of diagnostic imaging experience.
  • DI Specialist: Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) with eight years of diagnostic experience; or Radiological Technologist (ARRT) or Sonographer (ARDMS) with six years of diagnostic imaging experience.
Skills, Proficiencies, And/or Knowledge

Must be able to perform routine diagnostic imaging studies. Animal handling skills or ability/willingness to learn is required. Must be comfortable working with animals in general, including large animals. Must be able to assist with lifting heavy dogs, up to 100-120 pounds. Radiography, CT, MRI, and/or Nuclear Medicine experience/training desired, but not necessary. Will provide training for other modalities in the imaging service. Will need to be able to quickly maneuver around x-ray table to position animal patients and between table and adjacent anesthetic equipment. Must be comfortable with Windows-based computer applications.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's Veterinary Technology and/or Radiology Technology
  • Associate of Science degree in Veterinary Technology from an AVMA accredited veterinary technology program or technical degree from a certified radiology training program and more than 2 years of veterinary technician experience and/or radiological technologist experience. Prefer 2 years of experience solely utilizing and performing studies with two of three specialized modalities in CT, MRI, or Nuclear Medicine Imaging.
