Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Diagnostic Radiology Manager and/or Chief Technologist and the direction of the staff technologist, the Diagnostic Imaging Assistant performs essential patient care and operational support duties that contribute to exceptional imaging services. This role supports both direct and indirect patient care activities and helps ensure efficient departmental operations while delivering an outstanding patient experience.

To support operational needs, Imaging Assistants may be assigned to work at any Yale New Haven Health MRI location as needed, regardless of their regularly assigned site.

Responsibilities

Patient Screening & Registration Support

  • Complete routine patient interviews and screenings to gather required demographic and clinical information.
  • Accurately document patient information and communicate findings to technologists before imaging procedures.
  • Provide patients and families with basic information regarding imaging exams and procedures.
  • Perform MRI safety screenings in accordance with department protocols (MRI locations only).

Patient Preparation & Clinical Support

  • Assist in preparing patients for imaging exams and procedures.
  • Gather specimens, obtain vital signs and measurements, and assist with patient positioning as needed.
  • Prepare and organize supplies and equipment required for imaging procedures.
  • Support patient flow by understanding exam preparation requirements and workflow processes.
  • For CT locations, coordinate oral contrast administration and timing of subsequent imaging.

Medical Record & Documentation Management

  • Locate and review patient records and required documentation.
  • Enter patient demographic and clinical information into electronic systems including IDX and PACS.
  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
  • Identify and report discrepancies, unusual circumstances, or documentation concerns to leadership.

Patient Flow & Customer Service

  • Help coordinate patient care activities to maintain an efficient imaging workflow.
  • Prioritize responsibilities based on departmental needs and exam schedules.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service to patients, families, and visitors.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with multidisciplinary care teams.

Department Operations & Supply Management

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of imaging rooms and work areas.
  • Stock exam rooms with supplies, linens, and patient care materials.
  • Monitor inventory levels and place supply orders according to established par levels.
  • Support efficient department operations through proactive organization and preparation.

Professional Development & Continuous Learning

  • Complete all mandatory training and continuing education requirements.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and team initiatives.
  • Collaborate with leadership to establish professional development goals.
  • Maintain competency in assigned clinical and operational responsibilities.

Patient Experience

  • Contribute to a positive, patient-centered environment that enhances the overall imaging experience and reflects Yale New Haven Health's commitment to exceptional care.
Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Preferred:
    • Completion of a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) program or patient care training program.
    • Current enrollment in an accredited Radiology program.
    • Coursework in medical terminology and computer applications.

Experience

  • One to two years of relevant patient care experience preferred, including current enrollment in a Radiology program.

OR

  • Graduate of a healthcare training program including, but not limited to:
    • Certified Nurse Aide (CNA)
    • Phlebotomy
    • EKG/EEG Technician
    • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
    • Operating Room Technician
    • Associate's Degree in a healthcare-related field.

Licensure & Certification

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR certification preferred.
  • Must obtain BLS/CPR certification within six months of hire if not currently certified.
