Job summary

Edmonds School District is hiring for a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Elementary teacher at Madrona K-8 School, beginning with the 2026-27 school year. This .8 FTE position includes a non-continuing .2 FTE for the 2026-27 year only.

Plan and provide educational activities for DHH students, use ASL to communicate, and develop IEP-based goals. Requires WA State Teaching Certificate with SPED endorsement or ability to obtain and fluency in ASL.

Qualifications

  • WA Teaching Certificate with an endorsement in Special Education or the ability to obtain one before start date.
  • Graduate-level training in Deaf Education.
  • Must be fluent in American Sign Language and written English.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and provide educational activities for deaf and hard of hearing students with diverse learning needs.
  • Utilize ASL to communicate with students and staff.
  • Develop and implement student goals and IEP-based objectives.
  • Be proficient in sign language (ASL to PSE as appropriate).
  • Experience creating meaningful activities in a DHH education setting preferred.

About The Position

This is a .8 FTE position for a DHH Elementary (1-5) Teacher at Madrona K-8 School that begins with the 2026-27 school year.

Note: .2 FTE of this position is non-continuing for the 2026-27 school year ONLY.

Skills
  • plan and provide educational activities for deaf and hard of hearing students with a wide range of learning needs;
  • utilize ASL to communicate with students and staff;
  • develop and implement student goals and objectives based on Individualized Education Plans (IEPs);
  • be proficient in sign language with versatility from ASL to PSE as appropriate for instruction and communication; and
  • have experience in creating meaningful activities and interactions in a DHH education setting preferred.

Preference will be given to candidates with an endorsement in Deaf Education with ASL Proficiency.

Required Qualifications
  • Washington State Teaching Certificate with an endorsement in Special Education, or the ability to obtain one prior to the position start date.
  • Have graduate-level training from an approved program in Deaf Education.
  • Must be able to communicate fluently in American Sign Language and written English.

Salary

2026-27 Salary Schedule Range: $85,456 through $152,066. Placement on this salary schedule is determined by FTE and official documentation verifying Educational Level and Certificated Work Experience and will be prorated for less than a full year and/or FTE.

Benefits

Our benefits package includes Washington state health insurance coverage (SEBB) and a Washington state retirement package for eligible positions.

  • Eligibility for health insurance is based on whether the employee is anticipated to be compensated at least 630 hours per school year (September 1 through August 31). For the 2026-27 school year a .5 FTE continuing contract position will meet that eligibility threshold. Eligibility for a non-continuing contract position will be determined at the time of hire by counting the total anticipated compensated hours from the date of hire through the end of the non-continuing contract. Benefits include Medical, Dental, Vision, Long-term Disability, Life and AD+D Insurance and options for HSA, FSA and DCAP.
  • Eligibility for retirement is based on whether the employee is anticipated to work at least 70 hours per month for 5 months during the school year. For the 2026-27 school year a .6 FTE (either continuing or non-continuing) meets that eligibility threshold.
