Job Description

HII, Mission Technologies works within the weapon systems communities to defend our nation's interests at home and abroad. Our deep expertise in hardware and software development, prototyping, testing, and production enables us to support critical missions at scale for federal agency partners.

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Design Engineer with a minimum of 5 years of engineering-related experience, including 3+ years of proven application of Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) methodologies, to create the dimensions and tolerances for technologies to blend into the manufacturing system of a high energy laser system. The ideal candidate will contribute to the development and optimization of innovative products through structured, data-driven design practices that emphasize quality, performance, and customer satisfaction.

  • Lead and contribute to the design and development of new products, ensuring robust design practices using DFSS principles (e.g., VOC, HOQ, QFD, FMEA, DOE, tolerance analysis).
  • Apply statistical and analytical tools to identify critical parameters and improve product quality and reliability.
  • Work cross-functionally with manufacturing, quality, marketing, and supply chain teams to define design requirements and validate product performance.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective/preventive actions for design-related issues.
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and design verification reports.
  • Mentor junior engineers in DFSS methodology and design best practices.
  • Support design reviews and gate processes throughout the product development lifecycle.
Minimum Qualifications

5 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 3 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; or 0 years experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field.

  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience with Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) tools and methodologies.
  • Strong knowledge of statistical analysis, reliability engineering, and quality systems (e.g., Six Sigma, ISO, APQP).
  • Proficiency with CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo, AutoCAD) and engineering analysis software.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and project management skills.
Preferred Requirements
  • Experience in regulated industries (e.g., DoD/Military, medical devices, automotive, aerospace, consumer electronics)
  • Familiarity with Lean manufacturing and Design for Manufacturability (DFM).
  • Exposure to Voice of the Customer (VOC) methodologies and translating customer needs into technical specifications.
