Qualifications

Job description

Optomi, in partnership with a leading insurance organization, is seeking a Senior/Lead DevOps/Cloud Engineer to help modernize and automate a complex hybrid environment. This role will focus on improving DevOps capabilities across both on-premises and cloud infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on Azure DevOps and Terraform.

The right candidate will be someone who can look at an existing environment, identify gaps and opportunities for automation, develop the approach, establish standards and best practices, and then build and implement the solution. This is not simply an execution role. The team is looking for someone who can take ownership of ambiguous technical problems and drive them from assessment through implementation.

The environment is still heavily on-premises while continuing to transition toward the cloud, so experience working across both environments is important. The ideal candidate will be comfortable operating independently, making technical decisions, and building reusable automation and processes that can scale across the organization.

Experience of the right candidate:

• 5+ years of experience in DevOps, Cloud Engineering, Platform Engineering, Infrastructure Automation, or a related field.
• Senior or Lead-level experience owning DevOps initiatives and driving technical solutions.
• Strong hands‑on experience with Azure DevOps, including CI/CD pipeline development and YAML‑based pipelines.
• Strong hands‑on experience with Terraform and Infrastructure as Code.
• Experience designing and implementing automation from scratch, rather than primarily maintaining or executing existing solutions.
• Experience automating infrastructure and operational processes in on‑premises environments as well as Azure/cloud environments.
• Experience assessing existing environments, identifying automation gaps, and developing an approach or roadmap to address them.
• Experience establishing or contributing to DevOps standards, guidelines, governance, guardrails, and best practices.
• Strong understanding of CI/CD, infrastructure automation, deployment processes, testing, security, and release management.
• Experience with scripting or automation using PowerShell, Python, Bash, or similar technologies.
• Strong problem‑solving skills with the ability to take an ambiguous technical problem and determine an effective path forward.
• Self‑starter who can work independently, take initiative, and drive technical work with minimal oversight.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with other technical teams.

Nice to have:

• Experience with database deployment automation, including Liquibase, Flyway, SQL Server, or Oracle.
• Experience migrating Classic Azure DevOps pipelines to YAML.
• Experience with Terraform modules, remote state, reusable infrastructure patterns, or similar enterprise practices.
• Experience integrating testing and security scanning into CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience with Helm or other cloud‑native deployment technologies.
• Experience supporting cloud migration or modernization initiatives.

Responsibilities of the right candidate:

• Assess the existing DevOps and infrastructure environment to identify gaps, manual processes, and opportunities for automation.
• Design and implement new automation solutions across on‑premises and Azure/cloud environments.
• Design, build, and improve Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines, with a focus on YAML‑based implementation.
• Design and implement Infrastructure as Code using Terraform.
• Develop approaches and reusable standards for pipelines, infrastructure automation, testing, security, and deployments.
• Establish and promote DevOps guidelines, governance, guardrails, and best practices across the environment.
• Take ownership of technical problems from initial discovery and planning through implementation and validation.
• Automate manual deployment and release processes to reduce effort and improve consistency and reliability.
• Support and improve production release processes, including automation of application and database deployment activities.
• Integrate testing, security scanning, and other quality controls into CI/CD processes where appropriate.
• Develop scripts and automation to streamline infrastructure provisioning, deployments, and operational processes.
• Evaluate existing automation and determine where improvements, standardization, or new solutions are needed.
• Collaborate with technical teams to gather requirements, understand existing processes, and implement scalable solutions.
• Troubleshoot pipeline, deployment, infrastructure, and automation issues.
• Leverage modern DevOps tooling and AI‑assisted development solutions to improve engineering workflows and productivity.

• Hybrid: 2 days onsite per week - Either from Charlotte, NC: South Charlotte or Hartford, CT: Hartford area
