Job description

Join a growing organization that is strengthening neighborhoods across the nation! The Community Builders, Inc. (TCB) is one of America's leading nonprofit real estate developers and owners. Our mission is to build and sustain strong communities where all people can thrive.

The Development Associate role at TCB

Are you a creative problem solver with a focus on positive outcomes? Do you enjoy working on tangible projects that make a financial and physical difference to the communities where we work? Do you bring a drive for results and a desire to make a real difference? As a Project Associate you will partner with more senior members of the Mid Atlantic development team in their role as point person for projects in Virginia and North Carolina. Additionally, the Project Associate may collaborate with TCB staff in other divisions, such as Property Management, Community Life, Asset Management, and Finance, to advance pipeline projects and deepen our resident-focused outcomes. You will have the opportunity to learn about all aspects of the development process, including due diligence, entitlements, regulatory approvals, financing, design, construction, and leasing, delivering quality projects on schedule and within budget. We seek candidates with the demonstrated ability and desire to:

  • Solve problems creatively, with resourcefulness and tenacity
  • Work collaboratively, maintaining rapport with both internal and external colleagues
  • Actively participate as a team member, sharing new ideas and contributing to key initiatives
  • Set appropriate deadlines and work within them
  • Contribute to a broad range of critical activities, from organizing responses to Requests for Proposals to representing the organization at community meetings and public forums/events
  • Understand key risks and learn about strategies to avoid them
  • Work passionately to make our vision of affordable housing for all a reality
  • Support deal closures that will provide quality housing for residents in need
What’s in it for you – professional development
  • You will build key skills as a Project Associate, with an opportunity to make a real difference as the team works through complex decisions. We look for individuals who can grow with TCB over time into more senior level development positions.
  • You will work with a team of bright and dedicated individuals, whose creativity, persistence and get-it-done attitude make for an enriching work environment.
  • TCB is part of a network of America’s leading national nonprofit developers and owners so we learn not just from our own experience, but our peers as well. We are involved in advocacy at the federal, state, and local levels, using our experience to help shape public policy.
Here’s what we’re looking for
  • A passion for socially responsible real estate development
  • Strong financial and analytical skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including ability to present to audiences that are racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse
  • Ability to multi-task, handling multiple projects at once and consistently meeting deadlines
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office, Excel, and Project (Adobe skills a plus)
  • Bachelor’s degree with 1-3 years’ work experience in a related field or equivalencies
  • Direct experience/familiarity with affordable housing development is ideal but not required
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 12 Paid Holidays & tenure-based PTO accruals
  • Employer contributions to Health Savings Accounts
  • Company paid Life & Disability Insurance
  • 403(b) retirement plan with company match
  • Tax-advantage accounts: commuter/parking, medical & dependent care FSA
  • Hospital & Critical Illness Insurance
  • Confidential, 24/7 Employee Assistance Program
