Job summary

Ian Martin Group is seeking a Development & Production Geoscientist (Unconventional) to integrate subsurface data and guide development of shale and tight resources in Texas. The role spans seismic interpretation, petrophysics, and reservoir modeling to optimize well placement and recovery.

You will work with a multidisciplinary team to translate geological uncertainty into actionable plans, mentor junior staff, and communicate risks to leadership and stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree or equivalent advanced degree in geology, geophysics, petroleum geoscience, or a related discipline.
  • 10+ years of oil and gas geoscience experience, including significant unconventional reservoir development experience.
  • Proficiency in seismic interpretation, well correlation, mapping, volumetric assessment, uncertainty analysis, and well-development planning.
  • Strong capability in sequence stratigraphy, sedimentology, structural interpretation, petrophysics, reservoir characterization, geological modelling, and resource evaluation.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating subsurface interpretation with drilling, completions, reservoir engineering, and production data.
  • Right to work in the USA

Responsibilities

  • Integrate seismic, well-log, core, geological, geochemical, pressure, production, and completion data to build a coherent understanding of the reservoir and surrounding stratigraphic framework.
  • Assess resource quality and producibility, including organic richness and maturity, hydrocarbon charge, mineralogy, porosity, permeability, fluid saturation, pore pressure, geomechanical properties, natural fractures, and reservoir continuity.
  • Define and map reservoir-quality trends, landing-zone fairways, development constraints, and technically recoverable resource distributions.
  • Construct and maintain regional, field-scale, and development-scale geological models that capture stratigraphic architecture, structural complexity, reservoir heterogeneity, and key uncertainties.
  • Identify and recommend optimal landing zones, well trajectories, lateral lengths, spacing, stacking patterns, and development sequencing.
  • Support well planning and execution through geosteering, offset-well analysis, pre-drill prognosis preparation, operational risk assessment, and post-well evaluation.
  • Integrate geological interpretation with completion design and production performance to identify the subsurface controls on well productivity and decline behavior.
  • Evaluate parent-child well interactions, pressure depletion, frac barriers, interwell communication, and the potential for bypassed or stranded resource.
  • Perform volumetric and probabilistic resource assessments, uncertainty analysis, risking, development scenario evaluation, and inventory ranking.
  • Provide subsurface input to business plans, reserves and resource evaluations, investment decisions, acreage assessments, and development optimization studies.
  • Mentor junior geoscientists and communicate technical conclusions, uncertainties, and recommendations clearly to technical teams, leadership, and business stakeholders.

Job description

Development & Production Geoscientist (Unconventional)

Job Overview

Responsible for integrating subsurface data to characterize unconventional reservoirs, assess resource quality and distribution, and optimize well placement and development plans. The role works within a multidisciplinary team to translate geological uncertainty into actionable development decisions that improve recovery, capital efficiency, and long-term asset value.

Responsibilities

  • Integrate seismic, well-log, core, geological, geochemical, pressure, production, and completion data to build a coherent understanding of the reservoir and surrounding stratigraphic framework.
  • Assess resource quality and producibility, including organic richness and maturity, hydrocarbon charge, mineralogy, porosity, permeability, fluid saturation, pore pressure, geomechanical properties, natural fractures, and reservoir continuity.
  • Define and map reservoir-quality trends, landing-zone fairways, development constraints, and technically recoverable resource distributions.
  • Construct and maintain regional, field-scale, and development-scale geological models that capture stratigraphic architecture, structural complexity, reservoir heterogeneity, and key uncertainties.
  • Identify and recommend optimal landing zones, well trajectories, lateral lengths, spacing, stacking patterns, and development sequencing.
  • Support well planning and execution through geosteering, offset-well analysis, pre-drill prognosis preparation, operational risk assessment, and post-well evaluation.
  • Integrate geological interpretation with completion design and production performance to identify the subsurface controls on well productivity and decline behavior.
  • Evaluate parent-child well interactions, pressure depletion, frac barriers, interwell communication, and the potential for bypassed or stranded resource.
  • Perform volumetric and probabilistic resource assessments, uncertainty analysis, risking, development scenario evaluation, and inventory ranking.
  • Provide subsurface input to business plans, reserves and resource evaluations, investment decisions, acreage assessments, and development optimization studies.
  • Mentor junior geoscientists and communicate technical conclusions, uncertainties, and recommendations clearly to technical teams, leadership, and business stakeholders.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or equivalent advanced degree in geology, geophysics, petroleum geoscience, or a related discipline.
  • 10 + years of oil and gas geoscience experience, including significant unconventional reservoir development experience.
  • Strong capability in sequence stratigraphy, sedimentology, structural interpretation, petrophysics, reservoir characterization, geological modelling, and resource evaluation.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating subsurface interpretation with drilling, completions, reservoir engineering, and production data.
  • Proficiency in seismic interpretation, well correlation, mapping, volumetric assessment, uncertainty analysis, and well-development planning.
  • Sound understanding of unconventional reservoir geomechanics, hydraulic-fracture behavior, pressure depletion, well interference, and completion-performance relationships.
  • Ability to make practical recommendations from incomplete or uncertain datasets and clearly distinguish observations, interpretations, assumptions, and risks.
  • Strong analytical, collaboration, technical-assurance, presentation, and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Right to work in the USA

Preferred Knowledge and Experience

  • Development experience in shale oil, tight oil, shale gas, or liquids-rich unconventional plays.
  • Experience progressing an asset from resource appraisal and pilot development through full-field manufacturing-scale execution.
  • Working knowledge of horizontal drilling, geosteering, multi-stage hydraulic fracturing, microseismic interpretation, fiber-optic diagnostics, pressure-interference testing, and production surveillance.
  • Experience with static modelling, integrated subsurface workflows, machine-assisted interpretation, and analysis of large well and production datasets.
  • Familiarity with geological and reservoir software used for interpretation, modelling, well planning, and development optimization.
  • Demonstrated success improving landing-zone selection, well spacing, inventory quality, recovery, or development economics through integrated geoscience analysis.
