Job summary

The City of San Mateo’s Community Development Department is seeking a Development Review Technician I/II to support building permits and development planning applications. You will assist the public at the Permit Center, explain requirements, and route plans for review.

Developers and residents rely on accurate data entry, fee calculations, and timely communication. The role offers a path from I to II with increasing responsibilities, training, and teamwork in a fast-paced city environment.

Qualifications

• Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade with related coursework in planning, architecture, construction technology or a related field.

Responsibilities

• Assist the public at the Permit Center and provide customer service in person, by phone or by email regarding building and development review submittal requirements.
• Screen and review permit and development review applications for completeness; enter data into permitting software and route plans for review.
• Calculate various fees, prepare estimates, and apply fees to permits or related billings.
• Approve and issue over-the-counter permits.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and the public; promote a respectful, inclusive environment.
• Provide training and guidance as needed to junior staff and support team collaboration.
