Development Manager

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Sacred Heart Community Service, located in San José, CA, is looking for a Development Manager to provide leadership for our fundraising and communications efforts. This individual must be highly organized and possess a solid record of fund development accomplishments, superior writing and strategic communications skills, and an ability to work flexibly and creatively. The ideal candidate must be equally committed to our vision of a community united to ensure every child and adult is free from poverty, an approach of driving policy change through transformational leadership development, and teaching and living an anti-racism and anti-oppression worldview. For 62 years, SHCS has been one of the leading institutions in addressing poverty in Santa Clara County through a strategy that combines addressing the consequences of poverty through impactful programs while building power with people to push for systemic change.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Development Manager provides leadership in SHCS’ efforts to identify, cultivate, and secure financial support for the vision, mission, and work of SHCS. As a leader in the development team, this position is responsible for leading efforts to secure and administer grants from private and public funding sources, coordinating fundraising appeals (online and mail solicitation), assisting in the development of e-newsletters, and overseeing the work of a Grant Writer and a Development Associate to ensure all gifts are properly processed and acknowledged. This role also supports the development and implementation of SHCS’ fund development and communications strategies to recruit donations, volunteers, and involvement in the work of the organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Grants (50-65%)

• Leads grant solicitation and renewals, including research and development of opportunities, setting goals, creating and monitoring timelines and work plans for completing and submitting proposals, and coordinating efforts with Grant Writer, Program Directors, Managers, and Finance personnel.
• Direct implementation of grant administration and reporting, coordinating efforts with stakeholders to ensure compliance and reporting on grants and contracts with government, foundation, and corporate funding sources.
• Develops policies, procedures, and best practices to improve the effectiveness of grant administration processes while providing training and guidance to organizational stakeholders.
• Manages and provides training, support, and feedback to Grant Writer, interns, and volunteers.

Development (25-35%)

• Supports the development and implementation of the annual giving program, including direct mail and online appeals, e-newsletters, monthly donors, and peer to peer campaigns.
• Develops and implements strategies to research, identify, and increase the pool of donors.
• Ensures donor tracking, recognition, and stewardship efforts including direct communications and special events.
• Oversees and supports Development Associate in processing all donations (monetary and in-kind) from individual, foundation, government, and corporate sources.
• Manages and provides training, support, and feedback to Development Associate, interns, and volunteers.
• Supports program staff in identifying member stories for use in appeal, grants, and general communications.
• Supports marketing campaigns for major events including Back to School campaign (Pack-a-Back) and Holidays Programs.

Leadership (10-15%)

• Supports the planning and implementation of organization-wide programs, events, and outreach efforts, such as Holiday programs, Pack-A-Back program, Solidarity Summit, and First Fridays.
• Supports continuous learning, evaluation, and improvement within the Community Development team.
• Serves as a member of the Manager Round Table, Emergency Response Team, and serves as on-site manager as needed.
• Supports the planning of and attends staff meetings, retreats, and other team and organizational events.
• Supports policy campaigns as assigned, mobilizing volunteers and stakeholders to champion key campaigns.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED:

• Proof of full Covid-19 vaccination.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

• Strong commitment to our vision of a community united to ensure that every child and adult is free from poverty.
• Five or more years of leadership experience in nonprofit funds development.
• Four of more years experience as a nonprofit grant writer or grants manager.
• Superior ability to write for diverse stakeholders.
• Experience working with CRM databases (such as Salesforce).
• Experience with software including google suite, Campaign Monitor or equivalent, Canva or equivalent, Squarespace or equivalent, Microsoft Office.
• Experience managing projects or programs with multiple team members.
• Occasional evening and weekend work required, including the three days before Thanksgiving and the last two weeks of December.
• The position requires computer use 6-8 hours per day. The physical demands described here are representative of what an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this j ob. • Must complete a DMV and a background check, and qualify to be insured under SHCS driving policy.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

• One or more years experience processing donations.
• Graphic design or experience creating marketing collateral.
• Experience engaging volunteers and developing leaders.
• Bilingual and biliterate in English and preferably Spanish or Vietnamese.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

Position is exempt, full-time, and reports to the Director of Community Development.

COMPENSATION:

This is an exempt, salaried position ranging from $95,000 to $105,000/year commensurate with experience.
