Job summary

Cogency Global is modernizing its technology stack for corporate, legal, and compliance services. We seek a development lead who can take a mature platform and move it to a cloud-native architecture while keeping the business running.

You will write production code, tackle hard PRs, and guide architectural decisions that stay sound years ahead. Location is flexible and leadership matters as much as what you build.

Qualifications

• 10+ years building and operating production software, including leading delivery teams.
• Led modernization of a legacy platform to a cloud-native architecture, with documented outcomes.
• Expert in Java or C#, with fluency in the other; experience with AWS and IaC.
• Experience designing APIs and event-driven integrations.
• Demonstrated skill with AI-assisted development tools and responsible usage practices.

Responsibilities

• Act as the technical anchor of a scrum team: own design, breakdown of work, and delivery quality within architecture boundaries.
• Carve services out of a tightly coupled legacy estate using strangler and anti-corruption patterns.
• Shape API and event contracts, defining synchronous vs asynchronous integration, data ownership, idempotency, and failure handling.
• Design for operation in AWS from day one: infrastructure as code, pipelines, telemetry, recovery testing, security and cost visibility.
• Set how AI coding assistants and agents are used day to day, with quality gates and shared accountability.
• Coach through mentoring, design reviews, and code reviews to raise the team's capability in AWS and modern delivery.
• Collaborate with technology leadership to set direction, standards, and quality for the team.
• Partner with product owners, architects, and operations to sequence work around business risk.

Cogency Global is continuously modernizing its technology behind its corporate, legal, and compliance services. We are looking for a development lead who has done this kind of work before: an engineer who has taken a mature, business-critical platform, where years of business rules live deep in its code base, and moved it piece by piece to a modern cloud architecture without ever stopping the business.
You are still one of the strongest hands-on engineers on any team you join. You write production code, take the hardest pull requests, and make architectural calls that still look right two years later. You treat AI-assisted development as a core engineering discipline, and you know how to make a whole team faster and safer with it, not just yourself. Just as importantly, you leave every team better than you found it: engineers who work alongside you become more capable, and leadership gets an honest, well-reasoned read on technical risk and delivery progress. Location is flexible; we care about what you have built and how you lead, not where you sit.

Responsibilites

• Act as the technical anchor of a scrum team: own the design, the breakdown of work, and the quality of what ships, within agreed architecture and decision boundaries, while carrying a meaningful share of the delivery yourself.
• Find the seams in a tightly coupled legacy estate and carve services out incrementally, using strangler, anti-corruption-layer, and parallel-run patterns so business logic moves out of the database and into tested, observable code.
• Shape the API and event contracts other teams build against, making deliberate decisions about synchronous versus asynchronous integration, data ownership, idempotency, and failure handling.
• Design for operation in AWS from day one: infrastructure as code, automated pipelines, telemetry, tested recovery, and security and cost visible to the team that owns each service.
• Set how the team uses AI coding assistants and agents day to day: where they accelerate the work, where they need closer review, and how quality gates keep pace, with every engineer accountable for verifying correctness, security, and maintainability.
• Coach through mentoring, design reviews, and code reviews, helping engineers with deep experience on the existing stack build confidence and capability in AWS, and modern delivery practices.
• Work in partnership with the technology leadership technical direction, standards, and quality for the team.
• Partner with product owners, architects and operations to sequence product delivery work around business risk, not just technical convenience.

Requirements

• 10+ years building and operating production software, including at least 3 years as a hands-on technical lead of a delivery team.
• Has personally led the modernization of a large, database-centric legacy platform to a cloud-native architecture, and can explain in detail what worked, what didn’t, and why.
• Expert in Java or C#, with working fluency in the other; comfortable picking up new languages and frameworks quickly.
  Production experience designing and running services on AWS (for example ECS/Fargate, API Gateway, EventBridge, SQS/SNS, Step Functions, Aurora) using infrastructure as code (CDK or Terraform).
• Experience designing APIs and event-driven integrations.
• Demonstrated skill with AI-assisted development tools and agentic coding workflows (for example Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor), with a clear point of view on using them responsibly across a team.
• Fluency in scrum delivery, CI/CD, automated testing, and short-lived-branch workflows.
• A track record of raising the capability of an existing team
