Job summary

Johnson & Johnson MedTech Surgery, Robotics and Digital is seeking a Development Engineering Manager to lead a team supporting the OTTAVA Surgical Robotics platform in Santa Clara. You will manage and develop engineering talent, drive product development and design transfer, and collaborate cross-functionally to deliver robust, cost-effective medical device solutions.

Qualifications

  • Minimum six (6) years of relevant professional work experience.
  • Experience in product development, development engineering, manufacturing engineering, component development, or related technical functions within a regulated environment.
  • Experience managing, coaching, or leading engineers, technical project teams, or cross-functional technical initiatives.
  • Strong understanding of New Product Development, New Product Introduction, design transfer, manufacturing readiness, and regulated product development processes.
  • Knowledge of medical device quality systems, design controls, risk management, and applicable regulatory standards.
  • Proven ability to manage priorities, resources, timelines, risks, and stakeholder communication in a fast-paced technical environment.
  • Strong communication, leadership, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to influence cross-functional partners and drive alignment across R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, Product Management, Supplier Engineering, and suppliers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a team of Development Engineers through coaching, performance management, and career growth.
  • Mentor engineers and align roles, priorities, and deliverables to business objectives.
  • Lead Development Engineering execution for NPD/NPI programs by planning, developing, qualifying, and transferring components, tooling, equipment, and manufacturing processes while meeting quality, compliance, budget, and schedule commitments.
  • Provide technical and operational leadership through project planning, design reviews, risk and manufacturability assessments, and implementation of engineering standards, metrics, and best practices to drive consistent execution and business results.
  • Serve as the primary Development Engineering partner to R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, Supplier Engineering, and suppliers by aligning priorities, resources, technical risks, and execution plans.
  • Drive cross-functional decisions that balance design intent, manufacturability, supplier readiness, quality, regulatory requirements, cost, and business objectives to ensure successful product commercialization.
  • Lead the application of DFM, DFA, and design-to-cost principles to optimize product manufacturability, quality, performance, and cost across the development lifecycle.
  • Drive manufacturing readiness through engineering analysis, risk assessment, process capability evaluation, supplier alignment, and successful design transfer into production.
  • Ensure compliance with quality system requirements, design controls, risk management, GMP, and applicable medical device regulations and standards throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Oversee technical documentation, verification, validation, process qualification, and supplier development activities to ensure product quality, regulatory compliance, and successful commercialization.

Job Description

Johnson & Johnson MedTech Surgery, Robotics and Digital, is seeking an experienced Development Engineering Manager to lead a team of Development Engineers supporting the OTTAVA Surgical Robotics platform. This role will be responsible for managing and developing engineering talent, driving tactical and operational execution for product development and design transfer activities, and partnering cross-functionally to deliver robust, manufacturable, cost-effective, and compliant medical device solutions.

The Development Engineering Manager will lead a team of individual contributors responsible for supporting New Product Development, New Product Introduction, design transfer, component development, supplier engagement, and manufacturing readiness. The team works closely with R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, Product Management, Supplier Engineering, and external suppliers to ensure product designs, components, equipment, and manufacturing processes are technically robust, manufacturable, cost-effective, and compliant with medical device requirements.

This role is accountable for translating business and product development priorities into tactical and operational plans for the Development Engineering team. The manager will allocate resources, establish priorities, manage performance, support technical problem solving, and ensure engineering deliverables are completed within established timelines, budgets, and quality expectations.

The ideal candidate is a strong people leader with deep technical credibility in product development, manufacturing engineering, design for manufacturing and assembly, regulated medical device development, and cross-functional execution. This leader will guide engineers in applying engineering fundamentals, statistical analysis, DFM/DFA, GD&T, tolerance analysis, PFMEA, process characterization, and design transfer practices to support successful product realization.

  • Build technical capability and accountability by mentoring engineers, fostering medical device development expertise, and aligning roles, priorities, and deliverables to business objectives.
  • Lead Development Engineering execution for NPD/NPI programs by planning, developing, qualifying, and transferring components, tooling, equipment, and manufacturing processes while meeting quality, compliance, budget, and schedule commitments.

Qualifications
  • Education: A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent University degree is required; a focused degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering field or a related field is preferred. An advanced degree, Master’s is preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience with DFM/DFA, design-to-cost, manufacturability reviews, supplier collaboration, process development, and component qualification.
  • Experience with mechanical, electro-mechanical, opto-mechanical, molded, machined, or assembled components and related manufacturing processes.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T, tolerance analysis, statistical analysis, DOE, GR&R, PFMEA, process characterization, and process capability.
  • Experience working with external suppliers or third-party partners to develop, qualify, and stabilize components, tooling, equipment, or manufacturing processes.
  • Knowledge of medical device quality systems, design controls, risk management, and applicable regulatory standards.
  • Proven ability to manage priorities, resources, timelines, risks, and stakeholder communication in a fast-paced technical environment.
  • Strong communication, leadership, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to influence cross-functional partners and drive alignment across R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, Product Management, Supplier Engineering, and suppliers.
Preferred
  • Experience in surgical robotics, capital equipment, complex medical devices, or highly regulated product development.
  • Experience with manufacturing technologies such as injection molding, machining, laser welding, riveting, laser etching, soldering, pressing, joining, extrusion, over-molding, coating, or design for assembly.
  • Experience with test method development, test method validation, equipment qualification, FAT, IQ, OQ, PQ, software validation, or manufacturing equipment release processes.
  • Experience leading cost engineering, value engineering, design simplification, or strategic cost reduction initiatives.
  • Process Excellence, Lean, or Six Sigma knowledge or certification.
  • Experience developing engineering standards, metrics, dashboards, or operating mechanisms for technical teams.
  • Prior experience managing engineers in a matrixed, cross-functional, or global organization.
