Job description

RohmTek rents, optimizes, and operates analytical instruments in laboratories and remote field locations. We have built a proprietary digital platform to collect data from those instruments, apply calibration and quality-control processes, and deliver validated results to our clients.

We are hiring a Software & Data Systems Engineer to take a central role in the continued development of this platform and RohmTek’s broader digital infrastructure. You will join a small engineering team and work directly with laboratory personnel, field technicians, scientists, clients, and company leadership.

This is a hands‑on position with significant ownership. You will work across instrument connectivity, back‑end services, databases, cloud infrastructure, internal applications, and client‑facing systems. You will also help design RohmTek’s internal Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and automate laboratory and field workflows.

This position is based in Houston, Texas and requires regular in‑person work at RohmTek’s Houston facility. It is not a remote position. Applicants must currently live in the Houston area or be willing to relocate.

THE SYSTEM

Our platform is already in production and used to support active client projects:

  • A C# Windows service runs alongside instruments in the laboratory and field. It monitors instrument output, uploads files, manages operator sessions, and continues working when connectivity is limited or temporarily unavailable.
  • Containerized Python services in Microsoft Azure ingest instrument files, parse proprietary vendor formats, apply calibration and correction models, calculate derived measurements, and write results to analytical and relational data stores.
  • Automated quality‑control processes evaluate reference standards, instrument drift, duplicate measurements, depth, metadata, and other project‑specific criteria before results are delivered.
  • A web application gives field operators, analysts, and administrators a current view of instrument activity, analytical results, project status, alerts, and reporting.
  • Finished data is delivered to clients in the formats and systems they use, including integrations with third‑party scientific and geoscience software.
  • The primary challenge is not data volume. It is building a system in which every result is correct, traceable, and reproducible. Instrument data can involve competing sources of truth, incorrect metadata, unit conversions, clock differences, incomplete scans, changing calibration models, and unreliable field connectivity. We must be able to explain where a result came from, how it was calculated, and why it can be trusted.

The platform must also expand beyond its original instrument type and market. It will support additional instruments, analytical methods, laboratory operations, and industries without becoming either overly rigid or dependent on one‑off solutions.

WHAT YOU WILL WORK ON
  • Expand instrument data‑acquisition and measurement pipelines to support new instruments, analytical methods, calibration models, and quality‑control requirements.
  • Design and develop internal LIMS capabilities, including sample registration, chain of custody, inventory, analytical workflows, instrument maintenance, calibration records, quality control, and laboratory reporting.
  • Extend the existing web application for client access, including account management, tenant isolation, permissions, onboarding, reporting, and secure access to client data.
  • Develop APIs and services connecting RohmTek systems with commercial data providers, client applications, scientific software, and internal business systems.
  • Improve the C# field service responsible for file monitoring, upload, session management, remote configuration, software updates, and offline operation.
  • Strengthen deployment, monitoring, alerting, automated testing, continuous integration, and infrastructure‑as‑code practices within Azure.
  • Build dashboards and data products that turn analytical and operational data into useful information for laboratory personnel, field teams, and clients.
  • Support production systems, investigate failures, and make practical decisions about reliability, performance, security, and maintainability.
AGENTIC SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT

RohmTek uses AI‑assisted and agentic development tools as part of its normal engineering workflow. These tools help a small team develop, test, document, and maintain a substantial production system.

We expect the successful candidate to use these tools effectively while maintaining sound engineering discipline. Code must be understood, reviewed, tested, and controlled regardless of how it was produced. Agentic workflows must operate within defined permissions, approval requirements, audit trails, and rollback procedures.

You may also help develop AI‑enabled product features and internal tools, including applications grounded in RohmTek procedures and technical documentation. Accuracy, appropriate scope, security, and clear escalation to human personnel are essential.

RohmTek handles confidential client information and analytical results used in real operational decisions. Security is part of the engineering work.

Our current environment includes Microsoft Entra single sign‑on, database‑enforced row‑level security, least‑privilege service accounts, managed secrets, and separation of workforce and application identities. This role will help strengthen audit logging, vulnerability management, backup and recovery, client‑access controls, and security boundaries for agentic tools.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Professional experience building, deploying, and supporting production software.
  • Strong SQL and relational data‑modeling skills, including schema design, transactions, query optimization, and data integrity.
  • Proficiency in Python or C#, with the willingness and ability to work in both.
  • Full‑stack capability across web applications, back‑end services, APIs, and databases.
  • Practical experience with Microsoft Azure, AWS, or another major cloud platform. Azure experience is preferred.
  • Experience building data pipelines or moving data reliably between systems.
  • Working knowledge of application, API, database, and cloud security.
  • Experience with modern source control, testing, deployment, monitoring, and software‑development practices.
  • Experience using AI‑assisted development tools and an interest in agentic software engineering.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to explain technical decisions clearly.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Must live in the Houston area or be willing to relocate. Regular on‑site work in Houston is required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Data science, statistics, machine learning, numerical methods, or scientific computing.
  • LIMS, laboratory automation, scientific data platforms, or industrial software.
  • Integration with scientific instruments, sensors, edge devices, or industrial and IoT systems.
  • Containerization, infrastructure as code, and event‑driven or near‑real‑time data processing.
  • Calibration models, measurement uncertainty, analytical quality control, or anomaly detection.
  • Secure multi‑tenant applications and external client portals.
  • Oil and gas, mining, environmental services, or another quality‑controlled technical industry.
