Job summary

The City of Gilroy is hiring a Detention Services Officer to work in the Gilroy Police Department. The role involves booking arrestees, fingerprinting, photographs, and transporting detainees, with a focus on jail security and safety.

Initial placement follows base pay with additional bilingual pay, holiday pay, and education incentives. Training Academy and potential advancement steps are outlined, with varying shifts including holidays.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Two years of full-time work experience, preferably in public service.
• Attend a 176-hour Corrections Academy within one year from hire.
• Be at least 21 years old and pass physical agility tests.
• Must pass POS T background, FBI/DOJ checks and medical exam.
• Bilingual English/Spanish desirable but not required.
• Must hold valid CA driver license and safe driving record.

Responsibilities

• Book arrestees including fingerprinting, photographs and medical forms.
• Transport detainees and maintain jail security.
• Maintain, monitor and log prisoner activity; respond to incidents.
• Prepare and file police reports and logs; provide statements.
• Operate department equipment and computer data entry as needed.
• Meet state and department laws on prisoner rights and safety.
• Assist in property/evidence handling and facility hygiene.
