Job summary

Orange County Sheriff's Office is seeking Detention Officers to help maintain hospital/ jail security, perform head counts, and conduct cell searches. Duties include inmate booking, fingerprinting, photographing, and documenting property and incidents. Training and progression follow the County’s Step Plan with trainee appointments and the BDOT program.

The position requires a high school diploma or GED, U.S. citizenship, 20+ years old, and a valid North Carolina driver’s license.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED required.
• Significant public contact experience preferred.
• U.S. citizen and at least 20 years old.
• Possession of or ability to obtain a valid NC driver’s license.
• No Class B misdemeanors in last 10 years and no felony convictions.
• Must pass extensive background, medical, and drug screening.

Responsibilities

• Maintain facility security through checks, head counts, searches, and inspections.
• Handle inmate booking tasks including searching, fingerprinting, and photographing inmates, and document property.
• Maintain and update jail records, logs and incident reports.
• Work under supervision with defined objectives and deadlines; perform related duties.
