Job summary

Los Alamos County Detention Division is seeking a Non-Exempt Detention Officer responsible for custody and control of inmates in the detention facility. Under supervision, you will enforce laws and department regulations to ensure safety for staff and the public, while preserving confidentiality of privileged information.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED, 21+ years of age, NM Class D license within 30 days, and certifications in Corrections Officer/Detention Officer and Food

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED is required.
• Must be 21 years of age or older.
• Must obtain NM Class D license within 30 days of employment.
• Must complete Corrections Officer/Detention Officer certification within 1 year.
• Must obtain Food Handler’s certification within 1 year.
• Must be able to obtain firearms certification within 6 months.
• Successful background investigation and FBI fingerprint check.
• Successful completion of pre-employment physical and psychological exam.
• Pass pre-employment and random drug screening.
• Must not have felony or morals crimes.

CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt

DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: Police/Detention

PAY RANGES: DO-$24.09 TO $39.23/HR.

DC-$30.75 TO $50.07/HR.

Position Summary:

Under general supervision of the Detention Sergeant, responsible for maintaining custody and control of inmates in the detention facility. Enforces laws and departmental regulations that apply to detention to ensure the safety of personnel and the public. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Must be twenty-one years of age.
• Must possess, or ability to obtain within first thirty days of employment and maintain a valid New Mexico Class D driver’s license.
• Successful completion and maintenance of the Corrections Officer/Detention Officer certification in accordance with New Mexico Adult Jail standards within one year of employment.
• Successful completion and maintenance of Food Handler’s certification in accordance with the Department of Health within one year of hire date.
• Must be able to be certified to carry firearms through the Los Alamos County Police Department Range Course within six months of hire and maintain thereafter.
• Successful completion of thorough background investigation, including FBI fingerprint check.
• Successful completion of the pre-employment physical and psychological exam prior to commencing work.
• Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening prior to employment and subsequent random drug and alcohol screening while employed.
• Must not have been convicted of a felony or other crime involving moral turpitude.

Additional Minimum Qualifications for Detention Corporal:

• Two years of experience as a Detention Officer demonstrating increasing levels of responsibility,
• Must maintain the Corrections Officer/Detention Officer certification in accordance with New Mexico Adult Jail standards.

Preferred Qualifications Detention Officer:

• Associates Degree from an accredited college or university.
