Job summary

Los Alamos County in New Mexico seeks a Detention Officer or Detention Corporal to maintain custody and safety in the detention facility under the supervision of the Detention Sergeant. Qualifications

• Must be able to be certified to carry firearms within six months of hire and maintain thereafter.
• Successful completion of a thorough background investigation, including FBI fingerprint check.
• Successful completion of the pre-employment physical and psychological exam.
• Pre-employment drug screening and random drug/alcohol screening during employment.
• Must not have felony or moral turpitude-related conviction.

Enforces laws and departmental regulations that apply to detention to ensure the safety of personnel and the public. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Must be twenty-one years of age.
• Must possess, or ability to obtain within first thirty days of employment and maintain a valid New Mexico Class D driver’s license.
• Successful completion and maintenance of the Corrections Officer/Detention Officer certification in accordance with New Mexico Adult Jail standards within one year of employment.
• Successful completion and maintenance of Food Handler’s certification in accordance with the Department of Health within one year of hire date.
• Must be able to be certified to carry firearms through the Los Alamos County Police Department Range Course within six months of hire and maintain thereafter.
• Successful completion of thorough background investigation, including FBI fingerprint check.
• Successful completion of the pre-employment physical and psychological exam prior to commencing work.
• Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening prior to employment and subsequent random drug and alcohol screening while employed.
• Must not have been convicted of a felony or other crime involving moral turpitude.

Additional Minimum Qualifications for Detention Corporal:

• Two years of experience as a Detention Officer demonstrating increasing levels of responsibility,
• Must maintain the Corrections Officer/Detention Officer certification in accordance with New Mexico Adult Jail standards.

Preferred Qualifications Detention Officer:

• One-year relevant experience.
• Associates Degree from an accredited college or university.
