Qualifications

Job description

This position is located at the Adult Detention Center.

Under the general supervision of the Building and Grounds Supervisor, the Detention Maintenance Foreman serves as a working foreman responsible for coordinating, supervising, and participating in the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of the County’s Adult and Juvenile Detention facilities. This position plans and prioritizes daily work, assigns and delegates tasks, monitors work quality and completion, coordinates materials and equipment, and ensures maintenance activities are performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established standards.

The Detention Maintenance Foreman provides day-to-day direction and on-the-job training to assigned maintenance personnel; assists with employee performance management, timekeeping, and staffing coordination; and performs skilled and general maintenance work as needed. The position requires the ability to respond effectively to facility maintenance needs in a secure detention environment and may require work during evenings, weekends, holidays, emergencies, and other nonstandard hours.

  • High School Diploma or GED and five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in building, facility, commercial, institutional, industrial, or related maintenance.
  • One (1) year of lead, foreman, crew coordination, or other leadership experience preferred.
  • Valid State of New Mexico Driver's license or able to obtain within six (6) months of employment.
  • Work is performed in industrial indoor and outdoor environments near the presence of detainees.
  • May be subject to repetitive motion, extended periods of intense concentration.
  • May be subject to extended weather conditions when external repairs are required.
  • Exposure to hazardous materials and dangerous conditions are a possibility.
  • Subject to on-call response 24/7 or ensure the availability of response 24/7/365.
  • Position consists of work occurring during nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime with a rotating weekend and overtime schedule for the operations of the facilities.
  • Work schedule may include working on religious holidays.
  • Process and navigate the County’s electronic ERP system as necessary and appropriate based on the needs and requirements of this position.

  • Plan, schedule, prioritize, and coordinate daily maintenance activities for detention facilities.
  • Assign, delegate, and monitor work performed by assigned maintenance personnel to ensure tasks and projects are completed safely, accurately, efficiently, and within established timelines.
  • Inspect completed work and follow up on outstanding maintenance issues to ensure appropriate resolution.
  • Coordinate preventive, routine, and corrective maintenance activities for detention buildings, grounds, equipment, and related systems.
  • Perform a variety of building and facility maintenance, repair, and improvement tasks within the scope of the position's qualifications and authority.
  • Troubleshoot maintenance problems, identify potential causes, and determine appropriate corrective actions or know when specialized services or outside contractors are required.
  • Anticipate maintenance needs and coordinate the identification, ordering, scheduling, and availability of parts, supplies, materials, tools, and equipment necessary to complete assigned work.
  • Maintain awareness of facility conditions and identify maintenance concerns that may affect the safety, security, functionality, or continued operation of the detention facilities.
  • Provide on-the-job training, instruction, coaching, and guidance to assigned employees regarding maintenance procedures, equipment operation, safety practices, and work expectations.
  • Conduct employee performance evaluations and provide timely feedback regarding employee performance, attendance, work quality, conduct, and training needs.
  • Address routine performance and conduct concerns in accordance with County policies and procedures and refer matters requiring additional administrative or disciplinary action to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Review and verify employee timekeeping and coordinate and schedule staffing.
  • Ensure assigned employees comply with applicable safety requirements, including the proper use of personal protective equipment, tools, vehicles, machinery, and other equipment.
  • Promote safe work practices and immediately addresses unsafe conditions or practices within the scope of assigned authority.
  • Coordinate with the Building and Grounds Supervisor regarding maintenance priorities, staffing, projects, facility needs, and significant maintenance concerns.
  • In the absence of the Building and Grounds Supervisor, coordinates facility maintenance activities with the Parks & Facilities Director or other designated County representative.
  • Assist with snow and ice removal and other weather-related facility maintenance activities as needed.
  • Respond to emergency maintenance situations and participate in an assigned on-call rotation to support 24/7/365 facility operations.
  • May be required to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and other nonstandard hours based on operational needs and assigned schedules.
  • Operate and maintain vehicles, machinery, power tools, hand tools, and other equipment necessary to perform assigned duties.
  • Maintain appropriate records, work documentation, and information related to maintenance activities as required.
  • Use the County's electronic ERP system and other applicable technology to document, track, communicate, and manage work activities as appropriate to the position.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
