Job description

Detention Deputy

Fort Bend County Department of Corrections invites qualified applicants to fill the position of Detention Deputy.

Responsibilities
  • May be assigned duties in Transport, Utility, Food Service and Bailiff Departments.
  • Conduct head count and door checks on a regular basis.
  • Conduct strip searches as needed.
  • Classify incoming inmates, record fingerprints, and complete required paperwork.
  • Restrain inmates as needed in any confrontation with staff or other inmates.
  • Maintain custody while providing a safe environment.
  • Maintain facility and grounds as assigned.
  • Assist in supervision of recreational activities.
  • Supervise feeding and hygiene activities of inmates.
  • Supervise law library as assigned.
  • Inspect cells visually and recognize inmates requiring reclassification based upon physical or mental state.
  • Prepare reports on activities, incidents, shakedowns, searches, and other functions.
  • File criminal charges on inmates found to be in violation of penal code laws.
  • Assist and/or instruct other employees with their duties.
  • Serve as interpreter for non‑English speaking inmates, if bilingual.
  • Log inmate activities and departmental services to inmates as litigation prevention.
  • Notify supervisor when criminal activity, contraband or escape attempts are detected.
  • Recognize signs of physical abuse and communicate to Medical Officer on duty.
  • Participate in activities and duties related to emergency management during a local state of disaster as directed by appropriate county managers.
Minimum Requirements
  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Currently hold a Basic (or higher) TCOLE Peace Officer Certification; or be enrolled in a Texas Basic Police Academy and be eligible to take the TCOLE Peace Officer Licensing Exam within 45 days.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • Must have TCOLE Approved Firearms qualifications within the last 12 months.
  • Must maintain all requirements to be licensed as a peace officer under TCOLE rules.
  • Must obtain and maintain TCOLE Basic Jailer Certification per TCOLE rules within the first year of employment.
  • Must have ability to work rotating shifts.
Preferred Qualifications
  • One year experience in a law enforcement agency performing peace officer, telecommunication, or correctional officer duties.
  • Two years of military service with an honorable discharge.
  • Thirty semester credit hours with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 from an accredited college or university.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively with the public, other employees and elected officials.
Salary and Benefits

Salary: $33.60 per hour; $2,688.00 bi‑weekly; $69,888.00 annually. Full‑time employees are members of the Texas County District Retirement System (TCDRS) and receive comprehensive medical coverage, paid time off, and professional development opportunities.
