Job summary

Black & McDonald in San Antonio is seeking a Designer 2 to join our engineering team. You will apply knowledge of electrical utility and communications distribution systems to survey and design projects in line with NESC codes and utility owner requirements.

Key duties include pole loading analyses with PLS-CADD, O-Calc and Katapult, GIS design of distribution layouts, delivering finished work orders on schedule, and maintaining accurate field and project data.

Qualifications

• Associates in STEM program
• Moderate experience using PLS-CADD, O-Calc, Pole Foreman and GIS
• Basic understanding of designing electric utility and communication systems
• Familiarity with NESC and NEC codes

Responsibilities

• Perform electric utility pole loading analysis using PLS-CADD, O-Calc, Katapult and related tools
• Design and layout of electric utility distribution systems in GIS and process platforms
• Deliver completed designs/work orders on time per customer specs
• Occasionally collect field data to aid design and monitor equipment performance
• Maintain GIS database with data from various sources (work orders, as-builts, field reports)
• Create and distribute construction work orders and project packets
• Communicate with Designers and Engineers; work effectively in a team
• Follow safety procedures and quality practices

Black and McDonald, is actively seeking a Designer with knowledge of Electrical Utility and Communication distribution systems. Projects will involve surveying and designing existing electric utility and communications distribution systems in accordance with NESC codes and Utility Owner requirements.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

• Perform electric utility pole loading analysis studies using, O-CALC Software, PLS CADD, and Katapult Software
• Design and layout of electric utility distribution system projects in customer GIS and process platforms
• Deliver completed design projects/work orders on time, according to customer specifications and through a customer process database
• Occasionally, participate in the acquisition of field data to accomplish the design or to monitor and evaluate equipment performance
• Follow quality practice and procedures by self-checking all work product and checking the work of others as required
• Follow safety procedures
• Maintain the GIS database with information from sources including, but not limited to, work management systems, as‑built construction drawings, work orders, completion records, field reports or other information from the job sponsor
• Process and approve completion records, perform manual or computer aided drafting using AutoCAD
• Produce and distribute construction work orders and job packets
• Communicate with Designers and Engineers
• Work effectively in a team environment

Education Requirements

• Associates from a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) program

Preferred

• Bachelor of Science from a STEM program

Work Experience Requirements

• 1 – 3 Years of Industry Experience
• Moderate experience using software such as PLS-CADD, O-Calc, Pole Foreman and/or GIS
• Basic understanding of designing electric utility and communication systems
• Basic knowledge of applicable codes such as the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and the National Electric Code (NEC)
