Job summary

Og&e is seeking a Designer Staff (or Senior) to join our engineering team in Oklahoma City. The role involves performing a variety of design and drafting assignments, developing preliminary sketches, and contributing data to final drawings while collaborating with engineers and draftspeople.

The position supports two skill levels (Staff and Senior) and requires relevant engineering technology or related degree with several years of drafting/design experience.

Qualifications

• Staff: 3 years design experience and 3 years drafting experience with related coursework.
• Senior: 5 years design experience and 3 years drafting experience with related coursework.
• Two qualification paths require foundational coursework in algebra/calculus and electrical/physics topics.

Responsibilities

• Review drawings with engineers and drafting personnel for major projects.
• Provide drafting/design guidance and day-to-day project leadership.
• Offer input on project alternatives, feasibility studies, and cost estimates.
• Coordinate drafting and design projects with internal and external staff.
• Prepare detailed construction drawings from notes, sketches, and specs.
• Perform field surveys and create sketches from field notes.
• Ensure compliance with design drawings and drafting guidelines.
• Follow procedures and perform drafting work as needed.
• Accept other duties as assigned.

JOB SUMMARY

** This job is being posted across two skill levels (Staff / Senior). Applicants will be considered for the higher of the two levels in which they qualify. **
Performs a variety of design/drafting assignments. Investigates and procures all data required to develop a design. Prepares preliminary sketches and/or drawings. Applies all preliminary information and contributing data to develop or lead others to develop final drawings. Participates in the development of original designs or adaptations requiring specialized experience.

LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY

• General responsibilities with standardized processes. Works under limited supervision. Resolves routine questions and problems. Refers the more complex issues to higher levels. Follows established procedures to accomplish requirements of job. Some latitude for deviation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Confers with Engineers and other Design and Drafting personnel to review drawings and answer questions pertaining to major drafting and design assignments.
• Provides drafting and design related guidance and work leadership for day to day activities and projects.
• Provides technical input such as project alternatives, system/feasibility studies, cost estimates, design and equipment operating parameters.
• Coordinates drafting and design projects for both internal and external Drafting personnel.
• Prepares detail construction drawings for major components using design notes, sketches, and specifications.
• Performs engineering surveys at project sites, prepares sketches and drawings from field notes.
• Performs final field inspections of completed construction to assure compliance with design drawings.
• Reviews and maintains the drafting guidelines and specifications.
• Ensures drafting procedures and instructions are followed.
• May perform drafting work.
• All other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

STAFF:

• Associate's Degree or higher in Engineering Technology, Math, Physics, or related technical field AND all the following:
  (a) 3 years Design experience and 3 years Drafting experience (note: the Design and Drafting experience may have been obtained concurrently); AND
  (a) Completion of 6 hours of Algebra, Trigonometry, and/or Calculus college course work and Completion of 6 hours of Electrical, Electronics, and/or Physics college course work.
  OR
• Completion of 60 hours college course work toward a degree in Engineering Technology, Math, Physics, or related technical field AND all of the following:
  (b) 3 years Design experience and 3 years Drafting experience (note: the Design and Drafting experience may have been obtained concurrently); AND
  (b) Completion of 6 hours of Algebra, Trigonometry, and/or Calculus college course work and Completion of 6 hours of Electrical, Electronics, and/or Physics college course work; AND
  (b) 2 years Engineering Technician Associate and/or Designer Associate level work experience.

SENIOR:

• Associate's Degree or higher in Engineering Technology, Math, Physics, or related technical field AND all the following:
  (a) 5 years Design experience and 3 years Drafting experience (note: the Design and Drafting experience may have been obtained concurrently); AND
  (a) Completion of 6 hours of Algebra, Trigonometry, and/or Calculus college course work and Completion of 6 hours of Electrical, Electronics, and/or Physics college course work.
  OR
• Completion of 60 hours college course work toward a degree in Engineering Technology, Math, Physics, or related technical field AND all of the following:
  (b) 5 years Design experience and 3 years Drafting experience (note: the Design and Drafting experience may have been obtained concurrently); AND
  (b) Completion of 6 hours of Algebra, Trigonometry, and/or Calculus college course work and Completion of 6 hours of Electrical, Electronics, and/or Physics college course work; AND
  (b) 2 years Engineering Technician Staff and/or Designer Staff level work experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience in an electric utility or electric utility consulting environment.
• Experience working with distribution design standards, construction manuals, or typical detail libraries.
• Basic understanding of overhead and underground electric distribution construction practices.
• Familiarity with GIS-based distribution design tools (e.g., ArcGIS, Smallworld, or similar).
• Proficiency with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation, or utility-specific design tools).
• Familiar with utility pole and line analysis software (e.g., SPIDAcalc, PLS-CADD, or similar).
• Experience with document control systems or standards management platforms (e.g., ProjectWise, InEight, or similar).
• Working knowledge of NESC, NEC, OSHA requirements.
• Experience with SAP or other resource planning software.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, facilitation, and coordination skills.
• Familiar with Microsoft 365 Suite products and competent with Access and Excel.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Primary work in office environment.
• May be required to work non-standard work schedules including weekends and holidays.
• Based upon department resources, the nature of the work, and the size of the department, the ability to differentiate colors may be required for some positions.
• May require travel.

SALARY RANGE

Staff: $72,280 - $96,366
