Job description

Job Title: Hardware Designer and Drafter
Job Description

The Hardware Designer and Drafter creates precise technical drawings, 3D models, and labels for in-house hardware products, with a strong focus on robotic and automation systems. This role receives work assignments through an internal ticketing system and collaborates closely with engineering teams and stakeholders to deliver accurate, high-quality design documentation. The position supports product development across mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical systems and requires both independent work and effective teamwork in a fast-paced engineering environment.

Responsibilities
  • Create detailed 2D drawings, 3D models, and labels for in-house hardware products, including robotic and automation systems.
  • Produce drawings and models for mechanical components such as machine components, castings, sheet metal parts, and plastic parts.
  • Draft Printed Circuit Board (PCB) mechanical assembly layouts that capture the placement of mechanical components including connectors, buttons, and displays.
  • Design comprehensive cable assembly documentation, including routing, connector specifications, and clear assembly instructions.
  • Deliver high-quality design artifacts such as component drawings, assembly drawings, and complete Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Apply drafting standards, including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), consistently to all drawings and documentation.
  • Author and process Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and other change orders to support product updates and revisions.
  • Maintain and update Bills of Materials (BOMs) across product lines to ensure accurate and current component information.
  • Manage design data within Product Data Management (PDM) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems to ensure robust version control and document integrity.
  • Use SolidWorks to perform 3D modeling and assembly design, ensuring designs meet functional and manufacturability requirements.
  • Use AutoCAD to produce accurate 2D drafting outputs that align with engineering and manufacturing needs.
  • Leverage Microsoft Office and other standard office software tools to prepare documentation, reports, and communication materials.
  • Follow established ECO and BOM processes and adhere to change management workflows.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications to create and update design documentation.
  • Incorporate knowledge of manufacturing processes for mechanical components, including castings, sheet metal, plastic parts, and electromechanical assemblies, into design work.
  • Manage multiple concurrent design assignments through the internal ticketing or work order management system and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to ask clarifying questions, gather sufficient information, and refine requirements before and during design work.
  • Work independently on assigned tasks while contributing effectively to team-based projects and reviews.
  • Ensure all deliverables are accurate, complete, and aligned with established quality standards and engineering best practices.
Essential Skills
  • At least 5 years of experience creating mechanical drawings and models for electromechanical or robotic systems.
  • At least 5 years of experience producing PCB mechanical assembly documentation.
  • At least 5 years of experience designing and documenting cable assemblies.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks for 3D modeling and assembly design.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for 2D drafting.
  • Experience using Product Data Management (PDM) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems for design data and document management.
  • Working knowledge of Engineering Change Order (ECO) and Bill of Materials (BOM) processes and change management workflows.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Strong knowledge of drafting standards, including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes for mechanical components, including castings, sheet metal parts, plastic parts, and electromechanical assemblies.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask across multiple concurrent assignments and prioritize work effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy and completeness in all deliverables.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and collaborate effectively within a team.
  • Ability to ask targeted questions and gather sufficient information from stakeholders before and during design work.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Drafting and Design Technology, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience in a robotics, automation, or manufacturing environment.
  • Hands-on experience applying GD&T standards to production drawings.
  • Experience working within a ticketing or work order management system.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and other standard office productivity tools.
  • Familiarity with Amazon Robotics systems, products, or internal processes (a plus).
  • Experience with SolidWorks and mechanical design in a production environment.
  • Strong drafting and mechanical design skills with the ability to produce clear, manufacturable documentation.
Work Environment

This role operates in a professional engineering and design environment that supports the development of robotic, automation, and electromechanical systems. Work is primarily performed using CAD tools such as SolidWorks for 3D modeling and AutoCAD for 2D drafting, alongside PDM and PLM systems for structured data and document management. The position relies on an internal ticketing or work order management system to receive and track assignments, encouraging organized, methodical work habits. Collaboration with engineering teams and stakeholders occurs through digital communication tools and standard office software, with regular interaction to clarify requirements and review designs. The environment values precision, documentation quality, and adherence to drafting standards such as GD&T, while supporting both independent focused work and cross-functional teamwork. Dress code is typical of a modern technical office setting, suitable for occasional interaction with lab, prototype, or manufacturing areas as needed.
