The Role

Designs components or portions of systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Utilizes computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools such as, CAD, CAM, NX, or CATIA. Gathers information, makes studies, computes calculations, and prepares original rough layouts, sketches to present design proposal. Coordinates design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning group such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, and contractual specifications. Exclude classifications in which incumbents predominantly perform drafting assignments.

“The successful applicant should have experience with design, research, project management and overall general problem solving related to all classes of submarine machinery, electrical and piping spaces, The applicant should have a proven history of resolving complex problems with limited supervision, while intelligently interfacing with Trades, suppliers, managements and the customer.”

This position will provide support for the configuration management of Los Angeles Class (699CL) and Virginia Class Submarine (VCS) products to ensure accurate and consistent integration of design changes due to complex hull applicability. This includes creating, checking and processing Engineering Reports (ERs) for the department as well as checking an assortment of 688CL and VCS products (including, but not limited to ShipAlts, LARs, IRs, ERs, etc) for junior personnel and provide guidance, training, and mentoring.

The applicant should possess a working knowledge of shipyard operations as the position includes conducting shipchecks at local shipyards and naval bases. Additionally, the position includes travel, as necessary, to shipyards and naval bases across the United States which will require the applicant to be comfortable with resolving emergent high priority issues on an individual basis as well as leading during team efforts.

Must Have

Associate's Degree and 6 years of relevant experience

One of the following may be used as equivalent to Associate's Degree to meet minimum qualifications:

  • NNS Apprentice School graduate
  • Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate
  • High School/GED and 2 years of related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience
  • High School/GED and 4 years of non-related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience

  • Applicants must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Possess a strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and in groups with minimal oversight from management
  • Comfortable directing personnel of various Engineering and Design positions.
