The role demands advanced technical skill, strong project management, and the ability to independently manage multiple piping detailing projects, delivering accurate isometric drawings, installation documentation, and supporting materials.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead the detailed drafting and design of piping systems for field‑fabricated projects, producing high‑quality isometric drawings and installation documents.
  • Ensure all designs conform to applicable piping codes, layout standards, project specifications, and industry best practices.
  • Incorporate field construction constraints, site conditions, and constructability considerations to optimize design for safety, efficiency, and long‑term reliability.
  • Maintain accuracy, consistency, and high‑quality documentation across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Independently manage multiple piping detailing projects of moderate to high complexity, planning and prioritizing tasks to meet project milestones and deadlines.
  • Collaborate closely with project managers, engineers, and field teams to resolve design conflicts, clarify requirements, and incorporate site feedback.
  • Maintain comprehensive project documentation, ensuring alignment with engineering specifications, installation needs, and regulatory requirements.
  • Contribute to process improvements, standard workflows, and best practices for field piping design projects.
  • Mentor Designer I team members, reviewing work for accuracy, technical quality, and adherence to standards.
  • Develop and maintain strong, clear communication channels with all project stakeholders, facilitating smooth information flow, issue resolution, and alignment throughout project phases.
  • Provide guidance on industry codes, installation standards, and constructability best practices.
  • Proactively stay current with evolving industry codes, standards, fabrication technologies, and field installation methods, applying new knowledge to improve project outcomes.
  • Provide piping design support to other product teams or groups during peak workloads or when specialized expertise is required.
  • Engage in cross‑training to develop a working understanding of other product lines and systems, including skidded assemblies and panels.
  • Collaborate with and follow the direction of senior designers or team leads in other groups to align with shared standards and requirements.
  • Contribute effectively to cross‑team projects, applying piping design expertise while expanding knowledge of other product areas.
  • Demonstrate advanced understanding of piping codes, fabrication methods, and field installation practices.
  • Apply relevant industry standards, safety codes, and best practices to ensure designs meet compliance and installation requirements.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve design quality, reduce field issues, and streamline workflows.
  • Maintain and develop proficiency in CAD, modeling, and documentation tools relevant to field piping design projects.
  • Coordinate interfaces with mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation disciplines where required.

Required Experience

  • Associate degree or technical diploma in Mechanical Design, Drafting & Design, or Engineering Technology (preferred).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or related field (bonus).
  • 3 years of experience with Autodesk Revit (no older than four releases from the current release).
  • 1 year of experience with Navisworks.
  • Prior mechanical, field‑fabricated piping or system design experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Prior experience with BOM creation and revision control.
  • 2 years minimum of AutoCAD / Plant 3D (recommended).
  • Knowledge of custom‑fabricated component estimating (preferred).
  • Basic Epicor or other ERP experience (preferred).
  • Advanced CAD proficiency in Revit for piping systems, with the ability to produce accurate 3D models and installation documentation.
  • Familiarity with Plant 3D and AutoCAD for detailed drafting and coordination.
  • Strong understanding of piping codes, layout standards, fabrication methods, and field installation practices.
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs, GA drawings, and field installation documents.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation, electrical, and mechanical integration for field systems.
  • Awareness of constructability, safety, and long‑term system reliability in field conditions.
  • Skilled in BOM creation, revision control, and ERP system integration.
