Job summary

The Planet Group is seeking a Distribution Designer to design overhead electric distribution projects and process field survey data, circuit drawings, and estimates using GIS software. This role supports construction drawings and cost estimates, coordinating with QA and clients.

Location options include Woodlands, TX; New Orleans, LA; or Palm Beach Gardens, FL, with remote work possible depending on experience.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in engineering or technology, or power distribution design/experience required.
• 0-5+ years of experience preferred.
• Experience with IKE Pole Foreman, Maximo, and SAP beneficial.
• Strong written and oral communication; ability to work with clients on project design.

Responsibilities

• Update GIS software to reflect current field conditions.
• Design and process construction work requests for overhead distribution per guidelines and standards.
• Prepare CAD designs and construction drawings for QA and supervisors.
• Develop distribution circuit designs with understanding of circuit drawings and distribution concepts.
• Assist with pole boring, cost estimates, and reports for construction projects.
• Track design activities in the project management system and attend client meetings.
• Participate in training to maintain proficiency and promote safety.
• Support storm restoration activities as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Distribution Designer

Contract to Hire

Location: Woodlands, TX; New Orleans, LA or Palm Beach Gardens, FL

Remote: Possibly depending on experience

Pay Rate: $20-$50 DOE (Looking for All Levels D1-Design Lead)

The Designer designs overhead electric distribution projects that strengthen the client's electrical grid. The incumbent processes field survey data, circuit drawings, utility standards, project estimates, and feeder system upgrades using GIS software and the utility's work management system.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Updates GIS software to reflect current field conditions.
• With guidance, designs and processes construction work requests for overhead electric distribution, applying prescribed guidelines, utility standards, and procedures.
• Prepares computer-assisted designs and generates construction drawings for review by Quality Assurance, the Design Supervisor, and other designers.
• Prepares distribution circuit designs, with a working understanding of circuit drawings and distribution engineering concepts.
• With assistance, prepares pole boring, cost estimates, and other documents and reports required for construction and maintenance projects.
• Tracks and updates design activities in Client's project management system.
• Attend regular training to maintain proficiency in design work.
• Promotes a safe work environment using Client's Gold Standard.
• Stays current on client guideline changes.
• Follows Client safety procedures in the office and in the field, including pre-job brief and vehicle inspections.
• Attends meetings with client engineers to define project scope and submits meeting notes to the client and designated internal staff at pre-construction, pre-engineering, and pre-design stages.
• Assists with gathering field survey data and verifying the accuracy of maps and record drawings.
• Assists with storm restoration activities, including patrolling, extendo stick, and production lead during a storm.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS

• Associate degree in engineering or technology, or power distribution design or engineering experience, required.
• 0-5+ years of experience
• Beneficial to have experience with the following software:
  • IKE Pole Foreman
  • Maximo
  • Utility Work Management Systems
  • SAP
  • Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work with clients on project design responsibilities.
• Ability to tolerate change and a willingness to be flexible
