Job summary

The Planet Group is seeking a Distribution Designer for onsite roles across multiple locations (Woodlands TX, New Orleans LA, Palm Beach Gardens FL). This contract-to-hire position focuses on overhead electric distribution design, field data processing, and project estimates using GIS and work management systems.

Requires an Associate degree in engineering/tech or related experience, 0–5+ years, and familiarity with SAP, IKE Pole Foreman, and MS Office.

Qualifications

• Requires an associate degree in engineering or technology, or power distribution design or engineering experience.

Responsibilities

• Updates GIS software to reflect current field conditions.
• Designs and processes construction work requests for overhead electric distribution under guidance.
• Prepares computer‑aided designs and construction drawings for QA review and other staff.
• Prepares distribution circuit designs with understanding of circuits and distribution concepts.
• Assists with pole boring, cost estimates, and reports for construction and maintenance.
• Tracks and updates design activities in the client’s project system.
• Attends regular training to maintain proficiency in design work.
• Promotes a safe work environment following client standards.
• Stays current on client guideline changes.
• Follows safety procedures in office and field including pre-job briefings.
• Attends meetings with client engineers to define project scope and records notes.
• Assists with gathering field survey data and maps verification.
• Assists with storm restoration activities as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Distribution Designer

Contract to Hire

Location: Woodlands, TX; New Orleans, LA or Palm Beach Gardens, FL

Pay Rate: $25-$40 DOE

THIS IS AN ONSITE ROLE IN ANY OF THE LOCATIONS ABOVE

THIS IS STRICTLY A DESIGNER ROLE. THERE IS NO ENGINEERING CAREER TRACK ASSOCIATED WITH THIS ROLE

The Designer designs overhead electric distribution projects that strengthen the client's electrical grid. The incumbent processes field survey data, circuit drawings, utility standards, project estimates, and feeder system upgrades using GIS software and the utility's work management system.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Updates GIS software to reflect current field conditions.
• With guidance, designs and processes construction work requests for overhead electric distribution, applying prescribed guidelines, utility standards, and procedures.
• Prepares computer-assisted designs and generates construction drawings for review by Quality Assurance, the Design Supervisor, and other designers.
• Prepares distribution circuit designs, with a working understanding of circuit drawings and distribution engineering concepts.
• With assistance, prepares pole boring, cost estimates, and other documents and reports required for construction and maintenance projects.
• Tracks and updates design activities in Client's project management system.
• Attend regular training to maintain proficiency in design work.
• Promotes a safe work environment using Client's Gold Standard.
• Stays current on client guideline changes.
• Follows Client safety procedures in the office and in the field, including pre-job brief and vehicle inspections.
• Attends meetings with client engineers to define project scope and submits meeting notes to the client and designated internal staff at pre-construction, pre-engineering, and pre-design stages.
• Assists with gathering field survey data and verifying the accuracy of maps and record drawings.
• Assists with storm restoration activities, including patrolling, extendo stick, and production lead during a storm.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS

• Associate degree in engineering or technology, or power distribution design or engineering experience, required.
• 0-5+ years of experience
• Beneficial to have experience with the following software:
• IKE Pole Foreman
• Utility Work Management Systems
• SAP
• Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work with clients on project design responsibilities.
• Ability to tolerate change and a willingness to be flexible
