Job summary

Segment (Twilio) is seeking a Design Systems Lead to own and bootstrap an intuitive semantic token system across mobile, web, and React surfaces. You’ll live in GitHub managing the repo while staying fluent in Figma to keep design and engineering in sync and coherent as the product scales.

You’ll define governance for contributions, set a high visual quality bar, document clearly, and advocate accessibility and theming as defaults. This is a true 50/50 design-engineer role at scale.

Qualifications

  • Experience leading design systems at large organizations.
  • Ability to bridge design and engineering across platforms.
  • Proven track record of driving design-system adoption.
  • Strong documentation and governance skills.
  • Familiarity with WCAG accessibility standards.

Responsibilities

  • Bootstrap a semantic token system across platforms and frameworks.
  • Own the design system repo on GitHub, including versioning and changelog.
  • Set a high bar for visual design quality across surfaces.
  • Encode mobile, web, and React UI best practices into the system.
  • Define and govern contribution models for multi-team usage.
  • Keep design and engineering aligned between Figma and code.
  • Create clear documentation and drive adoption via onboarding.
  • Incorporate accessibility and theming as defaults.
  • Maintain a system roadmap balancing new work and migrations.
  • Explore AI tooling to evolve design systems in an AI-native way.
  • Operate autonomously in a fast-moving environment.
