Job description

Design Studies Engineer (AC Interference) – Senior Level

POWER Engineers, Member of WSP, is seeking a Senior Design Studies Engineer with expertise in AC Interference. This position is available at multiple POWER office locations with the possibility of remote work from a mutually agreed-upon location (please specify your preferred location in the application questions).

Roles and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for completing assigned projects successfully and maintaining strong customer relationships. This role requires technical expertise in primary production tasks, customer engagement, and mentoring team members. The engineer will develop strategies to minimize electromagnetic interference (EMI) between transmission lines and railway or pipeline infrastructure. Responsibilities include conducting detailed electromagnetic field (EMF) assessments, designing mitigation systems to protect infrastructure from electrical currents and voltages, and providing technical support for systems affected by AC interference.

The position also involves contributing to proposal writing, engaging with customers to develop new opportunities, self-management, and effectively communicating complex technical issues to various audiences. Mentoring less experienced engineers and contributing to training materials are also expected. Occasional travel may be required to support customer-focused projects.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE)
  • Minimum of 10 years of industry experience in electromagnetic compatibility analysis
  • Strong knowledge of railroad signaling systems, electromagnetic fields, interference, and compatibility principles
  • Proven ability to conduct interference assessments and develop mitigation strategies
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, including proposal and technical report writing
  • Experience with CDEGS/HIFREQ or similar software
  • Knowledge of EMC standards and safety regulations
  • Proficiency in resolving complex interference issues
Desired Education and Experience
  • Power Systems focused MSEE or PhD
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent
  • Extensive experience with high voltage power systems
  • Ability to perform additional design studies such as insulation coordination, TRV analysis, breaker rating studies, and others listed
  • Experience with electromagnetic transient software (e.g., ATP, PSCAD, EMTP)

Base salary range: $105,000 - $225,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications. This range complies with state and local regulations and does not include additional compensation such as bonuses or benefits.
