Job summary

Sumitomo Electric in Troy, MI seeks a Design Quality Engineer on a contract basis to ensure Class-A design execution for vehicle components and accessories. You will oversee timelines, participate in design reviews, and coordinate with suppliers and engineers to address mold and AAR issues.

The role requires 8+ years in automotive design quality or 6+ with a Master's, plus strong communication, documentation, and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 6 years and a Master's degree.
  • Candidate must have injection moulded/tooling experience and/or a minimum of 6-8 years of direct AAR experience.
  • 5 years minimum of automotive experience.
  • Experience working effectively with cross-functional teams to achieve results.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with strong communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee program timelines, a material development database, participate in design reviews, and be an effective communicator.
  • Review moulded parts pre-grain to ensure mold quality meets KO grain.
  • Provide visual documentation of mold issues and coordinate with supplier/engineer to address findings.
  • Review and validate Pre-Grain Approval Sheet from supplier and sign off to start graining of tool.
  • Assess AAR parts to ensure visual targets and dimensional stability for PPAP sign-off.
  • Maintain records of all parts submitted for grain approval and AAR.
  • Support on-site at supplier to root-cause issues with SQE and supplier quality teams.
  • Collaborate with CMF Design and Mastering for plaque-to-part scaling clarity.

Position Title: Design Quality Engineer

Duration:Contract

Location:Troy MI, USA

Essential Criteria:

  • Design Quality Engineer is a key role within the Studio Craftsmanship team and is responsible for ensuring that the design execution of Class-A products meet commitment to customers for vehicle and accessories.

  • They are also responsible for the harmony of the vehicle and the accessories created to enhance the Company's vehicle.

Responsibilities

  • The candidate will oversee program timelines, a material development database, participate in design reviews, and be an effective communicator.

  • Review moulded parts pre-grain to ensure that the quality of the mold is acceptable to KO grain.

  • Provide visual documentation of issues related to mold prior to grain approval and work with supplier / engineer to address issues found.

  • Review and validate the Pre-Grain Approval Sheet from supplier and sign off document to start graining of tool.

  • Assess all AAR parts (wrapped, painted, chrome, MIC, etc.) to ensure that parts are meeting visual targets and are dimensionally stable to support sign off for PPAP.

  • Maintain a record of all parts that have been submitted for grain approval and AAR.

  • Provide visual documentation of issues related to AAR parts and work with supplier / engineer to address issues found.

  • Support on site at supplier to help root cause issues as needed working with SQE and supplier quality teams.

  • Work closely with CMF Design and Mastering for clear "plaque-to-part" scaling.

Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 6 years and a Master's degree.

  • Candidate must have injection moulded/tooling experience and/or a minimum of 6-8 years of direct AAR experience.

  • This particular candidate needs to be able to add immediate value with the experience.

  • 5 years minimum of automotive experience.

  • Experience working effectively with cross-functional teams to achieve results.

  • Hold high standards for quality, attention to detail, and build strong relationships with other team members.

  • Self-motivated, flexible, adaptable to change, and able to work independently.

  • Ability to manage multiple parallel-path projects.

  • Experience with report writing and time management.

  • Experience with MS Office.

  • Comfortable with change and flexible in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.

  • Tooling experience is a plus
